36 years old and 1100 hours

Post by nappo787 »

Hello folks,

I would really like to know your opinion about a guy who is 36 years old and has 1100 hours TT, is it too late for attempting a good flying job in the industry in the near future? Like realistically I mean in terms of age and experience.

Are you going to be making $100k next January..probably not; OTOH, look at the jobs board man! There are many good jobs on there - pick your poison and get stuck in!

Most have 65 as mandatory retirement, although the US looks likely to raise that to 67

Not legitimate age, I mean airlines set their own standard. I think it's probably not happened in Canada or US but some country has age discrimination especially asia.

42 and 1400 myself. I was hired by a regional with a reasonable pay (for a Navajo) a few months ago so I can get some multi PIC (1000+ single PIC) but I have been getting calls from resumes 6 months old offering work. Even a float operation I was dying to work for 5 years ago called to offer me a rate that would beat my Navajo work. Unfortunately I am not in a position to switch paths now but it was and still is very tempting! Who wouldn't be tempted by the chance to fly flying boats on the coast!

In my opinion is that it is attitude that these guys want. At your time they will assume you will be able to keep the right side up. But the older people tend to be more mature and stable. I have found operations like that. The less the CP feels he will be running the "pilot daycare" the better! Lol. Not my line, that came from the old grouchy CP in Edmonton at my first job.

Ultimately the decision for you is what lifestyle you want. Do you want to live in the city working towards that 100k/year or find a smaller operation in a town with a lower cost of living and set up shop as a salty float pilot. Either way your no where near the end my friend. Almost every one of my 30s low time pals are getting snapped up as we speak.
