gunk and algae on floats

Post by tazin river »

Morning folks

Our float plane will go back in the water soon...as usual need to clean the floats of all this accumulated gunk and green stuff on the floats from last summer...is there anything we can add on the floats before the season starts to minimize this green stuff to accumulate....like some kind of polish or waterproof grease?

Cheers

tazin river, probably a good coat of marine wax would help. You should get in the habit of cleaning the floats off in the fall when the aircraft is removed from the water, then coat them down with a protectant. The slime that sticks to them can be corrosive to the floats, plus it seems to be easier to clean when it's fresh. If you have the capability to take the aircraft out of the water several times throughout the season, clean and wax them each time.

Do they still use zinc blocks attached to the water rudder on salt water?
