Any Wood Workers Out There?
I need to know if I can apply Varathane to ceramic tile. I have a kitchen table that has a tile inset and I would like to seal the whole table, wood and tile together. I know Varathane works on wood but would it adhere to tile or would it bubble/peel? Has anyone ever tried it?
Generally speaking, you shouldn't need to seal ceramic tile. The glaze supposedly is the seal.
Honestly I don't think I'd use varathane on the grout either, there are grout sealers out there. Unless it specifies on the label, why take a chance?

Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not, knows no release from the little things; knows not the livid loneliness of fear, nor mountain heights where bitter joy can hear the sound of wings.

yea flybabe is right, but if you are trying to make one smooth surface there is a clear epoxy I used at a bar years ago. It can be spread on from1/8" to several inches thick, this is what we did painted the wood a dark blue then poured this product on and but little plastic fish in it looked like water,it dries with an acrylic like finish almost like you poured plexi glass. I can't remember the name, if I do I'll PM you
I'd have to agree with Flybabe - I wouldn't apply that sort of a finish (varathane, lacquer etc) to tile or grout.
For that thick epoxy gel finsh that jimmyjazz was talking about, check out Lee Valley. It's not too hard to work with - but can be expensive (depending on the thickness). The kit from Lee Valley is approx $45 for 1 litre (9 sq ft coverage). If yours is a smaller project, I have seen smaller bottles of this stuff in Walmart, Canadian Tire etc.
Just one other word of advice - its more or less permenant. There is very little chance of removing it and still keeping the piece of furnature intact.
