Commuting from YYZ anybody?

Post by gasper »

Do you have to pay full fare on WJ when commuting, or is there a reduced rate?

Can you work many consecutive days and then get say apx. 2 weeks or so off?

Thanks in advance for the help on these questions!

you're in luck if you're commuting out of yyz. I think an employee stanby fare is in the vicinity of $7, not to mention lots of frequency to Calgary.

good luck with the interview! :)

It's actually free and confirmed for the first 2 months while training then $7.67 standby after that, it's great!

Terrific! Thanks for the info guys.

One more thing here..........do you happen to know if pilots are allowed any input into the make-up of the working schedule. Would I be able to say ........arrange to minimize my "non-flying days" in YYC in order to have the maximum allowed time at home in YYZ?

anything's possible. With the new agreement there will be a 'scheduling commitee' put together to address the pairings and how to improve them.

I believe there is a bidding option that is 'group days off together'. Or, you can just bid for certain groups of days off as desired, and you should get most of it. Most scheduling problems arise if people are bidding a preference to do pairings of a certain length.

Also, with the new agreement, the company will be trying out a 'port' idea. Not additional bases, but scheduling pairings out of another city. It is starting in YVR, but it wouldn't surprise me if eventually it starts up in YYZ, if it works well.

BTW, I commuted the other way with AC, and it really wasn't that bad once you got used to it. Give it a try before you make any life changing decisions. And Good Luck!

What kind of time do you have? How many views did you get on Workopolis before the call?

8000 plus hours; -I believe the call was in response to an WJ site application as I haven't applied via Workopolis yet.

I think if you commute from YYZ, ask for YYZ overnights, keep your requested days off during the week, bid some 'fly through CUN, PTY and SXM' you'll end up at home in YYZ with so much time off you'll be looking for a second hobby. Some of our YVR commuters make just one bid 'YVR overnights' and never see a night in the hotel.
And as someone else said, they are working on a WestJet port for YYZ, like YVR, where you'll have pairings built to start and finish in the city. Commuters also have some new features in our new agreement, like a free deadhead home.

(This sounds like a guy I know quite well who has a really good dentist... )
