-700 performance

Post by Bede »

Hello 737 drivers,

I was flying from YQT to YYZ in the CRJ200 the other day. We took off, and after the usually long climb arrived at FL350 and cruised at .74. As we're going through 320, I hear WJ checking in at FL390. WESTJET WAS STILL LOADING WHEN WE TOOK OFF FROM YQT!! After feeling quite ashamed of my little airplane, ATC added insult to injury by giving us a 60 degree vector (we're now going direct YSB) to get us out of the way of you guys and some Falcon. CRAP!! I knew you guys were quick, but not that quick.

What kind of rate of climb do you get in the flight levels? How long to get to altitude?? What do you cruise at (LRC, Norm, & HSC)?

Nothing to be ashamed of Bede.

I think the rate of climb on the NG is a by-product of being a 3300nm airplane. On a short hop, even full, the fuel load compared to what is a available, is small.

The exact ROC depends on A/C weight of course, but at FL390 something between 600 and 1000 FPM would be about normal. Cruise is usually .78 mach at 390.

Hope that answers some of your questions.

That's not bad at all. The 705 must be similar then, we get a bit less climb but HSC is 0.81, and I saw someone do 0.83 which is not really allowed by Jazz (we have an RVSM speed limit of .825).

I flew the RJ before I came to WJ, and the climb difference is profound. I believe you haven't been on the machine that long, but I remember having controllers querying if that was some special low rate enroute climb we were doing. It is fine down low, but runs out of jam pretty early. The NG's just have lots of thrust, whereas the RJ's, at least the -200's, have just enough. Very efficient, but doesn't exactly fall into the 'homesick angel' category.

Having said that, I liked the RJ, and there were some features on that plane that I miss on the NG's.

Just curious.

Could you give us some examples.

Ryan,
I always knew the 200 and especially the 100 were dogs. The 705 is half decent though. Did you do any 705 flying? How does the 705 compare to the -700

Just another point on the NG. We recently had a problem is still being worked out. For headstarts, the NG was scheduling itself for extra, unrequired climb thrust. On a short leg, when it goes from reduced TO, derated 2 thrust to 'holy f$%king $hit look at it go" thrust, things happen faster.... kind of like blowing the JATO bottles or hitting the nitros button.

I think we're waiting for a new software to completely rectify the problem, in the mean time, headstarts wake you up more than the Timmy's.

of course, if you are half-awake during that headstart setup, you may remember the problem and just do a quick runway change and set it back to your original runway, hence, resetting the 'brain' and getting the proper numbers! :D I was 1 for 2 on my last pairing! ;)

Or just type the ambient temp into the N1 page if there are boxes there. If it an aspirated TAT, it doesn't have the bug.

Well look at you two smart guys, and one from the -200 no less. I have seen those tricks however the memo about it said not to touch anything and record it in the 'info only' section of the logbook until further notice. I personally think full thrust is more fun anyway.

Hey, us ex -200 drivers ain't all noise and black smoke ya know...

On a side note, we did an "end-of-charter" ferry ywg-yqr on a recently updated 24k machine. Just the crew and enough gas to get to yqr with yxe as the alternate. There was some snow blowing around on the rwy, so we called it contaminated, and the winds were "gusty". You know what that means.

Just about peeled my face off... Yee-haa! :smt041

I think I'd be scared to try it by you're still here to talk about it. BTW, I tried calling today as I've been Mountain Biking both days.... I saw 14 on my therm today and my legs are now hurting. Hope you're not doing anything silly like working.

Yeah, turning jet fuel into noise and drilling holes in the sky for the next few days, unfortunately. 8 days off starting Sunday though. I might be able to get a day pass or two from the Mrs. sometime next week if you feel like getting punished... :butthead:  Or the wives can hang out and talk girlie stuff over $5 fancy coffees while we take the rugrats out in the trailers.

Let me know so I can rig up the roof rack for biking again this weekend. :supz:
