604. Less than 300 hours a year. Just north of 200k, adjusted for inflation every year. No office work. Show up, fly plane, clean it up, go home. Top shelf benefits and retirement.

Please drop any mention of per diem, it’s embarrassing.

Why?

$5k a year tax free and I barely spend any of it on the road because I’m home every night.

Stop mentioning hours. I do less than 300 a year. But I also have 15 days a month I can plan for that I don’t have to be available at all plus vacation, sick days. personal days, etc.

I also don’t clean. That’s embarrassing.

It's funny, per diems shouldn't be mentioned, until your employer stops offering them, then all of a sudden they'll be looking for companies that offer per diems

Per diems are legally required by the government for employees that travel away from their base, regardless of profession. In fact you can google the amount required to be paid, it’s just over 90$ a day as of 2022 I believe. Don’t act like they are doing you a favour by paying it.

Hired in march on the right seat, went left seat start of sept.

Just over 44k at this place since march. Full year in the left seat will be about 75k-85k. I'll report back in 365

Made about 6k at my prior place in jan/feb, 3k/mo.

I would love to see a reference that requires an employer to pay 90 dollars a day per diem. The link you provided shows the maximum allowance for tax deductions etc. It's not a required minimum.

I disagree. While per diems are intended to reimburse for meal costs, some companies (ie Jazz) negotiate very generous per diems that approach the statutory maximum ($117/day). Because per diems are tax free, I'd rather see a per diem increase than a pay increase.

2022 salary and flying stats

Yr. 12 737 Captain, WestJet.
Do not do Overtime. Just fly my block.
420 hours hard time in seat, with 940 credit hours paid.
A little over 1650 time away from base (TAFB) for year.
81 days worked plus approx. 20 days on ALPA Flight pay loss

-Salary- $209,000
-Company matched portion of non-registered saving plan- $42,000
-Contractually paid bonuses (Captain bonus, grievance settlements etc.)- $15,000
Total taxable compensation- $266,000
-Non taxable compensation (per diems and dry cleaning)- $6,800


Certain expectations for 2023 (crystal ball without a zombie apocalypse occurring)- 2022 time in seat lower than normal due omicron at beginning of year and some ALPA committee work throughout the year. Assuming 600-650 hard hours in seat and 130-145 days worked in 2023 with credit hours at about 975.

2023 Time away from base TAFB more likely normalized at 2700-2900 over the year.

I'm cheap. I eat one good meal a day. Keeps the calories down.

Regional airline F/O (with a bit of experience, clearly not my first year)
$78,000 base pay. Actual pay around $85,000 including a little overtime*
Per diems: $17,000 per year**
Total: $102,000 a year.

*Overtime averages 1.5 days a month. I don't do it for the money, but when I want a specific layover, such as going to see a sporting event or to have a citybreak with my family or visit friends. They normally have little flying with min. credit and longer layovers. It's a nice way to enjoy a "free trip" from time to time withouth having to pay for it...

**I count per diems if I get it because I spend that on things like food, which I would have spent anyway if I worked another job from home. So the 16 days a month I'm not home, I have to eat and that per diem covers that. The problem is, you can't count on that as "guarantee pay". You only get it if you do certain amount of flying / time away from base. Per diems could be higher, or lower, than the mentioned ammount. I just gave the avearge.

I worked at a company where per diems were raised to provide more money to the pilot group, without it looking like a pay raise to the other union groups.

So sometimes you should consider per diems as part of your salary.

The goal of per diems is also not to feed you, it's to cover the price difference between food at home and food on the road. It's easy to blow through 117 a day, it's just as easy to stay significantly under it. Whether you spend it all, or attempt to save as much as possible, I think we can agree higher is better, and that it does affect your choice of employer. Which makes it important info to know when considering an employer.

Agreed, per-diems these day are all over the place from $40-day to $250/day depending on where you’re working. It’s something I’d definitely keep an eye on when factoring what appropriate remuneration is.
