Airline Hires NASCAR Crews to teach: UAL Corp., which emerged from bankruptcy earlier this year, plans to schedule more flights with fewer aircraft in a move to lift United Airlines "out of the ditch," according to a top executive. Chief Operating Officer Peter McDonald said in a speech Tuesday evening at Northwestern University that the company has hired NASCAR pit crews to train ramp workers in order to reduce turnaround time at airports. McDonald said improving aircraft turns, refueling, cleaning and loading and unloading planes on layover will add 125 flights to United's schedule without putting more planes in the air. Increasing efficiency is part of the company's plan to return to profitability after being forced into bankruptcy by a surge of low-cost carriers, high labor costs, and ever-rising fuel prices. The key to its strategy, McDonald said, is United's "most important asset"--its people.(cbs2chicago.com), doesn't say what diviion of NASCAR or what teams the pit crews are from.(4-14-2006)
You're definately right about the motivation part. Although for most guys I would argue that the wage has little to do with motivation. Some of the best (most efficient and most motivated) ramp rats I have worked with made well under $10/hr. On the opposite side of the spectrum look at some of the senior AC rampies (or UA for that matter) who make well over $20 an hour. Some of those guys are completely useless.
Motivation has just as much to do with job pride, as well as leadership from supervisors and management.

"Going to the Dark Side"
in a previous life i was hired by Jetsgo as a rampie following the demise of my pilot career. they paid 10/hr plus benefits. never worked a shift cuz i was hired by the railway during the week long unpaid course they provided. meals were supplied
take this whatever way you want but for that kind of wage your gonna get somebody who could careless about the airline, schedule, passenger etc. Its funny how you skimp here and there but have to pay for it later in fuel, salaries of more expensive employees cuz the 10/hr rampie doesnt care. Just look at what happened to Alaska Airlines in Seattle with their switch to cheap help - all hell broke loose.
man im sounding more and more like a union thug every day

I have been on the ramp for five years for westjet. Even though we are not "directly" hired by westjet we still only make anywhere from 850-12/hour. Still your hired to do a good job so do a good job or get the f*ck out and let someone else take pride in there work.
The more you know the more trouble you can get in!
