Search efforts are continuing for a second day for a plane that has been reported overdue.
Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton tweeted that a search is ongoing for a Cessna 208 plane that had been travelling between Nakina and Fort Hope on Tuesday.
The agency had said that efforts on Tuesday were affected by light snow and low clouds in the search area on Tuesday evening, but the weather conditions are expected to improve on Wednesday

Re: Missing Caravan
Would this aircraft not be ADS-B equipped?
At the very least the company should have tracking resources in board?
Hope the outcome is good.

Re: Missing Caravan
I don't think they'd be inside ADS-B coverage. If they had GPS tracking I don't think they would still be searching.
Re: Missing Caravan
Anyone flying privately or commercially in the 21st century without Sat tracking is a fool. Sat-based ADSB in Canada provides pretty good tracking but lots of cheaper options too.
Re: Missing Caravan
There is a report from someone in Webequie that they saw a light that looked like a flare. If you are flying in that area today please be on the lookout.

Re: Missing Caravan
The old Nakina Air Service Caravans were bought a few years back and are run by Wilderness North now under the ZAM banner. I flew them a bit for NAS and the maintenance was top notch back then. Hoping for a positive outcome but 3 days is a long time in the elements.
Re: Missing Caravan
If they were ADS-B Out Diversity equipped, Spaced based ADS-B ( Aireon ) ought to have coverage able to track them. No idea if they were equipped though. Hoping for a positive outcome.

Re: Missing Caravan
My thoughts are with their colleagues, friends, and family members. What an awful thing.
Hopefully with the site being fairly close to a logging road there will be an investigation or recovery effort. Before the muskeg thaws, and before the blackflies and mosquitoes make it miserable.

Re: Missing Caravan
Several news outlets have now covered the story, the names of the two occupants of the aircraft have not been released, flying in northern Ontario in the winter has it's perils,
Don't let your wife talk you out of buying an airplane,
Re: Missing Caravan
WTF is Maj. Emmanuelle Gratton, an Air Task Force Commander, talking about "not all aircraft have transmitters". Irresponsibly ambiguous for a SAR Commander.
Why is tracking so discouraged by the aviation authority in Canada? FWIW, all operators I fly for insist on it. Anyway, you doubters can see the result of trusting the TC mantra of an ELT and flight plan.

Re: Missing Caravan
It is not a direct quote. The word choice was the reporter's. Major says transponder or ELT, reporter goes with "transmitter".
Good judgment comes from experience. Experience often comes from bad judgment.
Re: Missing Caravan
This aircraft obviously had a ELT and transponder. I don't understand why they felt they needed to bring that up. The problem is ELTs don't go off sometimes. Transponders only work inside appropriate coverage range.
Re: Missing Caravan
I'm not sure what is wrong with the quote. It's recommended that aircraft carry ELTs, but not mandatory. It would have helped a lot in this crash, as it would have sent off a signal upon impact and provided a GPS position to the SAR assets to speed up their search massively.
