GNSS Overlay approaches

Post by photofly »

... for example Sumspot VOR RWY 26 (GNSS) or NDB A (GNSS) - have they all gone away, now?

That is the message we are getting at Jazz, we no longer train them as they are gone or mostly gone.
So, if we encounter a traditional approach, we can fly them with the FMS but unlike the overlay, the underlying NAV aid must be tuned and pointing as the “primary” source of navigation.

I also found this in the AIM,

COM (1) COM 5.4.2.2 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Overlay Approaches This subsection was deleted as Canada no longer publishes GNSS overlay approaches.

That is unambiguous. Thanks.

I bet most of the places that had an overlay before now have an RNAV making the overlay needlessly redundant

For our AOM if it was an GNSS overlay approach the underlying nav aid could have been notam’d unserviceable and we could have still flown it as an enable(RNAV) approach. If it was not part of the overlay program, we could still fly it with the GPS(FMS) but the NAV aid would need to be serviceable and bearing pointers up in addition to the FMS.
