They do work in hospitals. They’ve worked for decades. Either N95s or similar mask to protect themselves from contracting disease contained in large respiratory droplets.. or procedural masks to prevent the spread of disease to exposed and vulnerable patients within the confines of an OR or ICU, etc.

The key being well trained professionals with nearly air tight hand hygiene for very limited amounts of time in very high risk environments to reduce.. not eliminate.. the spread.

Where they don’t work. In public schools where the unwashed masses are touching their faces all of the time, wearing dirty masks that are beyond the point of saturation, and immediately removing them outside of school hours to socialize with the exact same people.

Hand hygiene. That’s all we ever needed.

It was widespread paranoia that forced the powers that be to “do something” and masks were it. Something grandmothers could knit to “help with the cause” and something visible that made us feel like we were helping.

I actually agree with you as well. The blue masks were merely a decoration. People wore the same one for days and had them off half the time. N95s are more effective but they aren’t suitable for long periods. They are meant for short term use and get hot and soggy after a while.
