Holding speed in Canada

Post by nohojob »

Up to 6000 feet holding speed is max of 200kt.

So why a lot of holding pattern on MAP are showing 230kt?

AFAIK...

Below 10000' ASL the speed limitation is 250kts. So at 6000' 230kts would be acceptable.

Below 3000' AGL the speed limitation is 200kts.

From CAR 602.32

Airspeed Limitations

602.32 (1) Subject to subsection (2), no person shall

(a) operate an aircraft at an indicated airspeed of more than 250 knots if the aircraft is below 10,000 feet ASL; or

(b) operate an aircraft at an indicated airspeed of more than 200 knots if the aircraft is below 3,000 feet AGL within 10 nautical miles of a controlled aerodrome unless authorized to do so in an air traffic control clearance.

(2) A person may operate an aircraft at an indicated airspeed greater than the airspeeds referred to in subsection (1) if the aircraft is being operated in accordance with a special flight operations certificate – special aviation event issued pursuant to section 603.02.

(3) If the minimum safe airspeed for the flight configuration of an aircraft is greater than the airspeed referred to in subsection (1), the aircraft shall be operated at the minimum safe airspeed.

For holding:

bellow 6000 200kts

From 6000 to 14000 230 kts

above 14000 265 kts

So if you hold at 4000 you're still have to be at 200 kts.

of course, if you need faster for icing conditions for instance, ATC will let you hold at your clean speed.

However, I still don't quite understand why the speed in a lot of holds is max 230

It all comes down to how much airspace is being protected and type of aircraft regularly flying said procedures. Many of these airports where you see holding speeds of 230kts max or 265kt max are servicing very large aircraft with very fast clean speeds. Limiting these holds to slower speeds would require flaps which would increase the risk of structural over speeds and drastically increase fuel burns which Nav Canada takes into account when creating said procedures.

For holding: below 6000(200kts), from 6000 to 14000(230 kts) and above 14000(265 kts). Don't worry ATC will let you hold at your clean speed.
