Interesting to see Ben Smith added to the WJ BOD. I thought he was going to be Air Canada’s CEO a few years ago.

My prediction is that he's now slated to become WJ's new CEO. Through some contacts at ALP I learned that there was no new money up until about a week before the strike deadline at WJ. The company's offer was cost neutral, a la AC. Not sure how happy the company or ONEX is with Alexis anymore.

Why not hire someone with a little star power and groom them quick-fast to be the team coach?

SkyTeam needs an alliance partner in Canada. Having Ben on the BOD is a strategic move. Ben wouldn't have done it randomly. Who knows if Gerry is going to sell parts of Westjet to AF/KLM and Delta?
