Flooding in North East US...(Pic)

Small planes are clustered together after being towed to the only remaining dry land at an airport in Bloomsburg, Pa., as floodwaters from the Susquehanna River continue to encroach on the airstrip on Wednesday, June 28, 2006.

yep...suposed to crest today...BUT the crest is suposed to be aprox 7 feet higher then the level was yesterday....SO I think those planes are in trouble.....why didn't anyone fly them out? I don't see any hangers nearby.....so the hangers must be at the other end of the runway....guess maybe they just kept moving them up & up & didn't relize just how high it would get....

that really just isnt fair....

But I guess if they have never seen the water that hight before they would never think it would come that high.....and then oops they have run out of runway....I wonder if insurance would cover this?

I believe it was the same river that flooded it's banks and wrote off the Piper Chieftain prototype and the second Cheiftain test aircraft. Back in the early '70's prior to Piper moving everthing to Lakaland, FL.

I dunno, unless the weather was crap or the aircraft were unflyable at the time (i.e. just had there engine ripped out for maintenance), then there's really no xcuse for not getting them out of there. I know that if I had an asset worth dozens of thousands of dollars or more I'd fly it out of there at the first hint of any flooding. The only other thing I can think of is that the owners' homes were flooded before the airport was, and they were too busy trying to save that asset that they couldn't take the time to fly their plane out. If any of the above (crappy wx, aircraft unflyable, or owner unable to get to the aircraft) was the reason, then I have complete sympathy for the owners/operators of these aircraft. Otherwise I think they're fools.

The airport, Bloomsberg Municipal (N13), is located on the banks of the Susquehanna River. Here's a similar photo from 2004 when the river flooded after Hurricane Ivan. You can even see a few of the same aircraft!

I would be pretty upset if my Cessna got flooded because the limited dry parking space was taken up by a lake amphib. Hmmm, if it were my lake amphib, this would be my only chance for a gear up landing on the runway with out looking foolish

perhaps just bad luck... i'm sure closing every airport in close vicinity to a river wouldn't be a good solution

I don't get it. Were you trying say that the pilots were stupid for parking there, or because they are American they are stupid for parking there?
