If I've learned anything about Canadian aviation, it's that you should get used to disappointment.

There is a PICUS program. This from the FCTM…

7.5 AIRLINE TRANSPORT LICENSE TRAINING PROGRAM

7.5.1 GENERAL

Rev. 0.0 - 20 APR 2021

In accordance with CARs 421.11 Air Transat has a Pilot-in-command Under Supervision program for second-in-command.

7.5.2 OBJECTIVE

Rev. 0.0 - 20 APR 2021

To credit the Second in command with a certain amount of Pilot in Command experience while performing Co-Pilot duties.

7.5.3 REQUIREMENTS AND CONDITIONS

Rev. 0.0 - 20 APR 2021

The program IS NOT part of the Captain upgrade process and is available to all FCM who do not meet the licensing requirements in order to obtain the ATPL as per the CARs.

• The candidate will be paired with a voluntary Instructor (Line Indoctrination/Check A or B).The Instructor will sign the Flight hours report. • The candidate is responsible to keep a record of all the flights performed undersupervision in his/her logbook. • The candidate is responsible to keep all the training forms (Flight hours report) and submit them to the Chief Pilot for approval upon completion of the required flights. • The flying hours record will be added to the candidate's electronic training record file. • The candidate must submit his/her request for training to the Chief Pilot at least thirty (30) days before the first of the month in which the training is to take place. The Chief Pilot will then authorize the program based on operational requirements and available ressources.

7.5.4 TRAINING PROGRAM

Rev. 0.0 - 20 APR 2021

Air Transat hereby institutes a program of supervision to allow Second-in- Command to credit flight time as pilot-in-command time.

The training program shall be conducted in accordance with the following:

1. Air Transat shall ensure that the supervisory pilots are briefed on these procedures by the Chief Pilot; and 2. The pilot-in-command under supervision flight time will be acquired in the co-pilot's seat provided the pilot-in-command functions described in clauses a. and b. can be performed from the seat.

It's not in use and I don't see them being able to do it at volume. Trainers are all pretty busy.

That said, we can see this be implemented for the cadets that will be coming. Similarly to Jazz that has PICUS, it'll likely be hard to get it done as the trainers will be busy with line indoc. However, with AC slowing down on hiring next year as they reach their 6000 pilots, the shortage will be alleviated and ATPL candidates will be easier to find than today IMO.

For those considering. The plan here is still for over 50 aircraft, I would guess 60 or so, so there is still growth to come. Contract negotiations next year, so we will see improvements there. I would hazard a guess between WS and AC in compensation. Lifestyle is much better here IMO, and I will say again, crews here are awesome, flying is mostly great, and a great culture, so much so, when AC wanted to buy us, they wanted to keep the culture we have going on here. That says something!

As an career destination, it's a great choice to choose Air Transat. Air Canada and Westjet offer their particular career offerings and benefits, and each should choose the company that would work best for them, can't go wrong for either. We are all ALPA, and we are all now working together! Many are happy here, and Air Transat has been around for over 30 years, and will continue for 30 and more years to come.

I agree that it will be needed but I can't see it being meaningful unless they have more trainers or line guys with a right seat qualification to do PICUS. Our biggest hurdle for upgrades soon will be total time, not necessarily PIC time.

I don't think they have gone under 4000. Was at 5000 for a while.

Per curiosity is there a reason that some companies have minimums to upgrade vs Air Canada where it's just a bid ?

Surely many different reasons but at TS everyone pretty flies everywhere on the network. I doubt there are 2000 hour wide body captains at AC? Our expansion has not been significant enough to have to drop the minimums that low but It's on it's down unless they can get more experienced people to apply. We're even loosing pilots that are upgradable, that's a bigger problem in my opinion.

About 5-6 years on property. I’m sure it will come down but that is reality.

I suppose it's around 2017-18 for current upgrades but that's including a 2 year covid layoff. Actual YOS is 4-5.

However anyone hired now will be 3-4, possibly less.

Is Transat due for a pay bump in the next while?
