B747 Rating ?
Just for something to do I'd like to get a B747 rating on my licence, so recognized by Transport Canada. Any suggestions on where you can do this and how much it would cost ?

You’d be better off spending $20000 on your own flight sim setup in your mansion.

I guess that's what you'd rather spend it on, but clearly not this person. Similar to how some would rather spend 100K building an incredible flyable RC replica than get a PPL or CPL. Or hell, buy their own actual airplane.
Re: B747 Rating ?
Retired now but during my career flew the B727, B737, B757, B767, B787, just need the B747 and B777 on my licence to complete the set .... and get the free sub. Figure I could renew my instrument rating while I'm at it. How much is dual on a light twin these days ? I'm guessing not much less ?
Now if I could find a B707 (Travolta?) and B717 sim. ? How many people have B707, B717, B727, B737, B747, B757, B767, B777, B787 on their licence ? Or I could spend the $100G on therapy and get a normal hobby.

I think this the absolute best reason to do thisNauclerus wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 3:48 pmRetired now but during my career flew the B727, B737, B757, B767, B787, just need the B747 and B777 on my licence to complete the set .... and get the free sub. Go for it!

Amazing. Great airplane line up. Wish I flew some of those.Nauclerus wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 3:48 pmRetired now but during my career flew the B727, B737, B757, B767, B787, just need the B747 and B777 on my licence to complete the set .... and get the free sub. If you’re gonna go at it, why don’t you get the A-series going too.
There for sure a couple A310 sims kicking around. 100(G) or k can probably buy you few of those.
I bet your basement is lined with airplane cockpit trainer posters.

Re: B747 Rating ?
Get your type rating on all of them. That’s not the issue. The issue is you’re looking to get it stamped in your blue booklet. The 747 has no value in Canada.
Re: B747 Rating ?
That's a question, would Transport even issue the rating given the foreign training, and the fact the type is not operated here ?CaptDukeNukem wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 8:22 pm The issue is you’re looking to get it stamped in your blue booklet. The 747 has no value in Canada.
Looks like Bob Briggs beat me to it anyway, that will be tough to beat. https://imgur.com/TwFSuJF
Re: B747 Rating ?
If that's the case, why not get your FAA license conversion which should carry over all your Canadian ratings, and then get your FAA 747 rating?Nauclerus wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 8:55 pmThat's a question, would Transport even issue the rating given the foreign training, and the fact the type is not operated here ?CaptDukeNukem wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 8:22 pm The issue is you’re looking to get it stamped in your blue booklet. Re: B747 Rating ?
A few years ago, I met a Canadian pilot who had recently left flying a 747-400 in the Middle East. He said he would soon be starting his new job flying a 747SP at Pratt and Whitney based at YMX. Perhaps the rating may not provide specific advantage in terms of reduce training legally required but it could assist in flying a cool jet. I think the SP is still around in PW.CaptDukeNukem wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 8:22 pm Get your type rating on all of them. That’s not the issue. Re: B747 Rating ?
Perhaps look for a B17 type? That would nicely round off the Boeing 7 line..

How about a Boeing 377(or KC-97).
I have some time in a B75.

Re: B747 Rating ?
I remember reading an article about GE testing their GE90 engine for the 777 on their own 747-200. It was extremely interesting about the VMCG considerations and throttle management for takeoff with the much bigger GE90 installed. I suppose the small engine on the PW 747SP combined with its location means that the VMCG issues are less of an issue. I suspect that the short body 747SP might have more difficulty handling a GE90 than a normal length 747. Flaps and vertical tail are different on the SP as well.

They used to have a 707 sim but it looks like it’s out of service now.

I read an article years ago that said that the reason the 747 had a hump for the front portion was that the captain had to have space to sit on his wallet, but this picture makes that even better.pelmet wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 5:13 amI remember reading an article about GE testing their GE90 engine for the 777 on their own 747-200. Re: B747 Rating ?
Funny anyone would wonder why a guy might want this.
$20,000 is a lot of money, but Rolex doesn’t have any trouble whatsoever getting people to shell out the same or more for an obsolete, relatively inaccurate timepiece made out of base materials.
It would be a heck of an experience.

Re: B747 Rating ?
I have the 747 in my Canadian Blue Book, flown overseas, however if my memory serves me I think I had to show 50hrs on type to have it added.Nauclerus wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 8:55 pmThat's a question, would Transport even issue the rating given the foreign training, and the fact the type is not operated here ?CaptDukeNukem wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 8:22 pm The issue is you’re looking to get it stamped in your blue booklet. Don't ever waste your money at Pan Am Sim training(Especially Miami), its one of the worst run places with old broken down Sims and their trainers are more Sim operators than trainers.Ki-ll wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 4:35 pm https://www.panamacademy.com/flight-training-devices/

Flying the thing would be an experience. Sitting in a simulator reading emergency checklists isn't worth the bragging rights that will come with an asterisk.
