When issued a missed approach instruction by Centre, (ex; after the missed approach, climb and maintain 9000' direct the XX NDB) does that cancel the published missed approach instructions or is that to be executed after completing the published missed approach?
Heard it today on the radio and I was wondering as to the correct answer...

Depends on how it's worded though. . .
If the clearance is "AFTER the missed approach" then you can fly the published, followed by the clearance.
But if it's "on the missed approach," or "in the missed approach," then the published instructions are cancelled, and you are to fly the clearance.

Agree with Pygmie regarding regarding terminology (after, during, on, etc.)
However, would disagree that alternate missed app instr cancel published missed app instruction if I was uncertain about terrain clearance and I was not confirmed under vectors. And yes, in that case, I'd ask ATC if the alternate instructions provide terrain clearance and advise them of my intentions accordingly.
As far as I know, Canadian alternate missed approach issued by ATC are NOT assessed (TERP'd) as they are in the U.S.
It'd be nice to hear 55+'s perspective on this.
