Studies correlated with aerial firefighting

Hello everyone,

I'm during studies at Faculty of Transport at Silesian University of Technology in Poland. We will acquire CPL and ATPL frozen licences but as you can guess it's rather more about car traffic and logistic than aviation and firefighting. I'm going to become an aerial firefighter one day and I have possibility to even change one or two subject. I can even study such subject on another Faculty.

Do you know any subject/field of studies that you find beneficial for aerial firefighting and you career in aviation?

Hi, good question. Given most of that flying is more pure hands and feet, anything academic might only help with resume ammo to get into admin or director roles, but I'd suggest something involving forestry and conservation.

Back in university for Bio I did an elective that was along the lines of ariel photography and forestry. It had elements of surveying, photogrammetry, GIS, species identification, forest ecology, etc. Quite a mixed bag, but I can say the ariel identification aspects really did give me a little prep for working as a spotter/bird dogging- but identifying relevent species was pretty much covered in ground school anyways.

As far as just aviation- More Met? Aerodynamics?

You don't really need to know anything special for the aerial firefighting. They'll teach you what you need to know once you have the job.
Generally speaking, if you want to have a deeper understanding of aviation and human factors, a basic understanding of physics will likely be more beneficial. But even that is hardly needed to get your license.

There was a 1972 book, "Air Attack on Forest Fires" by Alexander Linkewich that was the only thing that I can think of.
BC Forestry also had a manual in the seventies.
