New hire QOL: WB FO/RP or NB ?

Post by Caterpillar »

Title says it all... In terms of quality of life, as a new hire junior FO (YYZ or YUL based), what would be the best seat if your #1 criteria is to be home the most (either overnights or total time away from base)?

Widebody FO/RP or Narrow body FO?

I think if you live in YYZ, YVR or YUL and want to be home all the time, Wide body RP on reserve would be the best lifestyle choice. Those guys hardly get called as they can only use you for overseas pairings for the most part and it has to fit exactly in your reserve available callout period. If you're on 3 day RAPs and you don't get called out on the first day, it's very unlikely that you will work the 2nd and 3rd days of your reserve period and you could probably get released from reserve on the morning of your last day. I think most guys on reserve work once or twice a month and there are periods where you will go 5-6 weeks without flying. Expect to get rusty pretty quickly though. If you hold a block, expect to work 5-6 overseas pairings amounting to 18days plus Sim/ART. Junior block holders are absolutely getting hammered with terrible schedules. You also won't be able to get released early as a NB or WB FO as they could use you throughout the day. Those guys work a lot more.

Why isn't AC just get rid of the RP and replace it with FO possitions? Then train all new hires as FOs and train RPs to TO/Land? That way they can use those that would get hired as RP on domestic routes too. Training cost? Almost all other companies in the world use 1/2 extra FOs/Capt for augmented crew.

Indentured servitude. The rating and experience are useless everywhere else.

Not sure if it's 100% true, but I was told by a few people it was their way of protecting their training department from mass exodus of qualified personnel to Asia and Middle East back when the hypergrowth was happening down there, knowing how much money was being offered on some of these contracts (vs the crumbs they give at AC).

Stupid question I guess, but hiw much money do you make when you sit at home for 5-6 weeks??

Widebody FO/RP or Narrow body FO?
Currently there is no maximum days permitted to work for the Wide-body FO or RP position. Not so much in YVR but YYZ and YUL FO/RP block holders can be assigned a lot of days. Western Europe from YUL/YYZ can produce an 18 day month. RP’s DH a lot (1/2 credit) and that can produce a 20 day month.

Junior widebody positions out of YYZ and YUL are a lot of days if you are a block holder. Reserve is better though.

Narrow body FO’s have a max 16 days.

All of this could change in the upcoming contract. Most airlines now have a daily guarantee. ALPA is currently seeking the same. A daily guarantee of 5:15 would bring everyone to max 16 days.

That's a lot.

Sorry to thread drift.... I'm sure this was all answered in surveys, but any idea if the majority would rather have $$ or QOL increases if it comes down one over the other?

Our contract is lacking both, personally I’d rather get a giant raise and and some QOL improvements. Then with the improved pay will be a lot easier to attract more pilots (the improvements in QOL will require a boat load more pilots).

Should be the other way around. Big QOL improvements, like less days worked for example, open up the ability to make more money.

QOL stuff is harder to get than money. Much harder.

This time we're going to get both, there's no more ACPA.

People are chasing money more than we think. Porter doesn't have trouble finding new hires... Yet, they're not unionized but got very decent pay
