FAA STC vs TCCA STC???
Hi! Long time looker, first time poster.
I've searched the forum came across an old thread about FAA STCs being "accepted" by TC. But I am sincerely confused and hoping someone on here is more intelligent than me (shouldn't be hard)...
I want to (have) installed a uAvionix AV-30-C with the TailBeaconX on my Arrow. Messing around on uAvionix website, sits two separate PDFs. One for FAA AML, and another for TCCA STC approval. On the FAA AML/STC is my old and slow Arrow (PA28R-180). But behold! On TCCAs STC "approval" it lists just a handful of aircraft, none being Piper's. But if I read it correctly, the last paragraph says to refer to the FAAs AML and TCs approved list (both of which contain my jollopy)....
FAA STC https://uavionix.com/downloads/AV-30-C/ ... Signed.pdf
FAA AML https://uavionix.com/downloads/AV-30-C/ ... Signed.pdf
TCCA STC https://uavionix.com/downloads/AV-30-C/ ... signed.pdf
So.....am I correct in understanding, TC will accept Avionics being installed that fall under an FAAs STC and AML? Or are my last two good brain cells finally meeting their end?
I'm sorry but I'm new to this, and I haven't even found an AME in my new area to speak too. I should know this, but I don't, so I'm asking for help!
Thanks!
Tim

Re: FAA STC vs TCCA STC???
Check with the avionics shop that'll be installing and signing it off.... You should be good though, there's a bilateral agreement about accepting STCs, as well as a staff instruction for TCCA.
As for the small list of aircraft on a TCCA STC, it's likely that those types have TCCA type certificates, so the manufacturer has obtained a TCCA STC to go with them. If the aircraft has an FAA type certificate that TCCA has accepted, and has no corresponding TCCA type certificate, then it's generally accepted that the FAA STC is good.
The short answer is that for little planes, an FAA STC should generally be accepted with no issue - but whoever is doing the install and signing off has to agree with that interpretation, so talk to whoever that is.

Re: FAA STC vs TCCA STC???
Pez is entirely correct. For an Arrow, for which there is no Transport Canada TCDS, the FAA STC should be accepted without difficulty. For aircraft for which three is a TC TCDS, a TC STC will be required.
If you are uncertain if your aircraft has an TC TCDS, or is just accepted with the FAA TCDS, find your plane on the registry website, and look under "Basis for eligibility for registration". there your will see the type certificate. Generally, though not always: "A-xx" or "A-xxx" will be TC, where "A and a mixture of letters and numbers will be FAA. But very old types (Example Stinson 108, A-767) may have "A and three digits. If it is not obvious whether it's a TC or FAA TCDS, just search the TCDS number, and you can read whose it is. There are other ways, but this is the easiest.
You can also look on this:
https://tc.canada.ca/en/aviation/aircra ... craft-list
List, which seems to be the more recent version of AN B038, which appears to have been withdrawn. It lists the US airplanes accepted in Canada, so expect that no TC STC would be required to overlay an FAA STC against these types. There are very rare exceptions to this, but I very much doubt you'll encounter them on a Arrow...

Pez and PilotDAR are correct. Even if there isn't an FAA STC for your particular model, if you can show that it's certified and prove that it will improve safety, they'll sign off. Things like certified LED lighting fall into this category.

Re: FAA STC vs TCCA STC???
Thanks too all of you!
I actually did find a local AME and spoke with him in person this morning, which prompted me to check this thread again for replies....
After asking him this same question, he kinda looked at me like sideways and said "With enough money, you can install anything legally."
Very nice guy, and he explained the exact things to me (I'm new to private ownership, only ever rented before) in words I could understand. He actually looked the aircraft up on that same site PilotDAR and low and behold, there she is, PA28R-180. He explained how the FAA STCs are almost always accepted as good by TC. Avionics, speed mods, windows, carpet, props, everything with FAAs approval is usually good to go. He even explained how having things installed in the US can get TC approval too. Now I know
I appreciate all you're help! Fly safe.
