IATRA application minimums

Post by Flying_Bison »

Hello all,

I'm a fresh cpl, multi-IFR rated, with around 220tt. My next step is to start studying for the IATRA exam. I am however confused about the minimums you need to qualify for it. From what I gather, you need 250 hours, but I can't find anything official that states this number. I looked through the TC website, on this forum, and asked some instructors/airline pilots.

The other day I called a TC examination office, asked them this same question, the lady told me that it's now only half of 250, so I can write the exam with 125h. So in this case does it mean I can write it... But it's not "valid" until I hit 250h? For example I wrote my CPL at 115h but it only allows me to apply for the CPL at 200h.

So I could write the exam but legally still not be allowed to fly a multi crew aircraft? I'm very confused about this.

I know that I won't get a multi crew aircraft job anytime soon, I'm not that naive, but I am planning on applying to work on the ramp, so I'm wondering if I should be applying to operators that fly planes like the dash-8 or limit myself to 703 ops with a pc-12/king air.

If anyone has some experience with this or has a link to the answer, it would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance. :D

I'm about to write the iATRA at 220TT. My interpretation of the rules are you are allowed to write the exam at 50% of the TT requirement (125TT), however you will not be able to hold or exercise the privileges of the IATRA until you hit 250TT.

By "TC website", so you mean the CARs? Because that's where the answer is.

The purpose of the IATRA is to qualify you to get a multi-crew type rating. Refer to CAR 421.40 to find the type rating requirements. For the requirement to write the exam, refer to CAR 421.13.

Bottom line: You can write the exam at 125 hours, but need 250 hours to get a type rating.

Yes. Just like you could write your CPL written and still not exercise the privileges of a Commercial Pilot.

The written exam is only one element of the licensing standard. You need to meet all of them.
