First Job / Type Rating / Low hours

Hello everyone,

I am a few weeks away from finishing my integrated ATPL Training (220TT).Then will come the search for the first job.
Personally the instructor option is not an interesting option for me personally.
Is it a good idea to pay for your own type rating to boost your CV?
I know that Super T Aviation in Alberta offer type rating BE20 (10 hours dual command on BE20 and 22 hours on simulator ).

Can having about ten hours of turboprop flight experience really help you get a first job?

Some options like "pay to fly" exist internationally, good or bad? Does this option exist in Canada ?

Do NOT pay for a type rating in Canada.

I’ve been out of the Canadian pilot hiring scene for a little over five years so things may have changed, but I wouldn’t care about someone who bought ten hours in a King Air. In fact, I would assume they were a bit of a doofus and all else being equal would pick someone else.

If you want to do it for fun: go have fun and do it.
If you want to do it to boost your resume: don't bother, it won't help. It's rare to see in Canada, and most hiring pilots would wonder why you'd even do this.

Ah. I thought there was only 1 in Pilot in Command at a given time.

But yes. There's no real shortage of entry level jobs, and no shortage of entry level pilots, either. Worth noting that when applying somewhere, it's a CPL you'll hold. The "frozen" ATPL bit isn't a bad thing for a job where you'd otherwise need an IATRA, but the licence you'll hold initially is a CPL.

As others have said, generally not seen as a positive thing to get your own type rating in Canada. If you're hired for a flying spot, you'll be trained by the operator.

One thing that bears repeating if you don't want to instruct; most CPs and Ops Mgrs at 702s and 703s in this country have two stacks of CVs; one large one from folks who emailed, and a much smaller one from folks who showed up. Unless an ad specifically asks you NOT to show up, it's generally not a bad thing to show up, be friendly, shake hands, see if CP or Ops Mgr has a minute to talk. The more remote operators are a pretty good place to look, too...ends of long northern roads.... Last, a lot of hiring takes place in spring.
