Another IFR GPS question

Post by OneYonge »

Say you are flying IFR and your Heading Indicator breaks….but you still have a good GPS.

If you were given radar vectors, for spacing or some other reasons… would you just refuse them and try to ask for waypoints instead?

Have any of you ever tried asking to be given groundtracks to follow instead of headings?

You can ask for ground tracks. The controllers normally don't assign them but it is fully within their abilities and rights they just don't during normal operations. If you lost heading, I would absolutely not hesitate to ask for tracks, or for waypoints. Definitely let them know you lost your heading.

That said, you do still have a magnetic compass.
