Class 4 Renewal ??
Hello aviators
Quick question regarding renewing expired Class 4 Flight Instructor rating ( More than 2 years - exam rewrite).
I was told by a Class 1 that I have to start from scratch and do the entire 30 hours inflight and PGIs.
Is this the norm?
Cars don’t mention flight times , just enquiring to make a decision.
Thank you

Re: Class 4 Renewal ??
Reference CARS 421.66
(c) Where a flight instructor rating has been invalid for more than 24 months, an applicant for renewal shall:
(amended 1998/09/01)
(i) provide a recommendation from the holder of a Class 1 Flight Instructor Rating in the appropriate category indicating that the applicant is considered competent to complete the written examination(s) and undertake an instructor flight test;
(ii) successfully complete the examination requirement set forth under Knowledge for the appropriate flight instructor rating; and
(iii) successfully complete a flight test for the appropriate flight instructor rating.
(amended 2000/09/01)
No where does it say you need to redo the 30 hours HOWEVER point (i) requires you to show a Class 1 you are competent to undertake a Flight test which they will recommend you for a flight test to renew your Class IV Rating. This could require you to do some additional flying if they deem you rustier than you thought in order to be recommend. Maybe this is what your Class 1 meant?

Re: Class 4 Renewal ??
Um...no. What exactly was the claim made here? Were you told you *have* to do the whole course again?
You absolutely are NOT required to redo the whole instructor course. I recently did a Class 4 renewal with an instructor who was 6 years expired, had provided less than 100 hours of dual instruction, and wasn't flying at all in the interim (total time around 500-ish hours). I think we flew half a dozen hours and did as much again in the classroom.
YMMV, but claiming that you are required to do the whole course again is nuts. If this was the claim made, then the instructor either (a) doesn't know what they're talking about, or (b) is trying to milk you. Either way, I would recommend going somewhere else.
This issue has been discussed here previously: http://www.avcanada.ca/forums2/viewtopi ... it=renewal.

Also this, you need a recommend. But to insist that you *have* to do the whole course again is completely unreasonable. You need a refresher. How much of a refresher depends on a lot of variables, but the entire course again is *very* unlikely.Livinthedream87 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 20, 2024 11:02 am HOWEVER point (i) requires you to show a Class 1 you are competent to undertake a Flight test which they will recommend you for a flight test to renew your Class IV Rating. Also this. I hope we're just seeing an example of unclear communication here.

Re: Class 4 Renewal ??
When I looked at renewing my expired Class 3 (also more than 24 months expired), the school I spoke to estimated anywhere between 10 and 15 hours to get to flight test standard. This estimate consisted of:
- 1-2 hours of dual instruction to help me get comfortable flying a small aircraft again (I was flying a 737 at the time)
- 5-10 hours of PGI and actually flying the lessons
- 1-2 hours of flying solo to build confidence and practice any extra exercises that the examiner might ask
