ONE EYE VISION: FLYING FOR AIR CANADA
Hi there,
I’m currently a student pilot working towards my CPL ratings and IFR. I hold a valid category 1 medical with no vision restrictions. However I do have monocular vision which means I can only see out of one eye. I know air Canada has their own pre employment medical exam. I aspire to one day fly for air Canada or one of the major airlines. Will this come back to haunt me at the air Canada medical? Does anyone know of people at the majors with one eyed vision?
Thank you

Re: ONE EYE VISION: FLYING FOR AIR CANADA
Any requirement beyond a Cat 1 medical would be discrimination.
Re: ONE EYE VISION: FLYING FOR AIR CANADA
Then why do they organize their own medical examinations that go beyond the standard Cat 1 checks?dialdriver wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 5:48 pm Any requirement beyond a Cat 1 medical would be discrimination.
As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

Pre employment drug tests go beyond Cat 1.dialdriver wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 5:48 pm Any requirement beyond a Cat 1 medical would be discrimination.
It’s not discrimination at all.

Taking NAC lowers ALT and AST as well... BUT.... elevated liver enzymes are also a strong sign of Hereditary Hemochomitosis. Estimated around 1 in 200 Caucasians have it now. It'll cause you to lose your medical for a while but you'll get it back. Better than dying at 60. This is no joke, zero awareness about this right now. If you're starting to feeling rough, stiff, and tired into your 40's get checked ASAP.
Re: ONE EYE VISION: FLYING FOR AIR CANADA
Im very surprised you're able to hold a cat 1 while being blind on one eye. That's shocking actually

Needless to say I had to jump through a bunch of different vision tests with TC when doing my initial medical a couple years back. It was definitely a tough process. However in the end I got it! I’m not a PPL holder with night rating. Working on IFR + CPL at the moment. I actually even received my PPL before the vast majority of my class. Since I was basically born with monocular vision, my depth perception and visual spacing is very normal and not affected!

The way I understood the requirements, you need a normal field of vision to hold any medical category. Good to know.Monocularpilot wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 5:43 pm Hi there,

I had a friend about 20+ years back that was an ATP heli pilot that lost an eye.
TC set bars so high to get his medical back that most people never would have been able to do it due to the cost. I don't recall exactly but it might have been something along the lines of getting 50 or 100 hours of night dual flight in certain class of large 2 crew helicopter or something like that. Anyway. he had friends and was able to get it done, got his ATP and medical back.
Anyway, AC is above and beyond for their intake medical and I've been told that's been verified as permitted, once you are here though it's Cat 1 only and you can refuse acting above that ie. ongoing bloodwork.
I would suggest calling or even stopping in at one of their occupational health clinics and see if you can get a doctor to chat for minute. They're mostly pretty good and I imagine they would give you some insight.

Yes there are pilots at air Canada with monocular vision.

I had to fight transport with a vision issue but it worked out.
