LEAP Engine De-Icing Issues

Post by pelmet »

From TSB.....

C-FFIP, a Boeing 737-8 operated by Air Canada as IFR flight AC266, was departing from
Winnipeg/James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (CYWG), MB, to Toronto/Lester B.
Pearson International Airport (CYYZ), ON. Prior to departure, AC266 was taxiing out in heavy
snow and required deicing prior to takeoff. During the deicing procedure in a quartering tail wind,
the aircraft suffered an engine auto shutdown that was followed by the second engine auto
shutdown. The crew completed the quick reference handbook checklist and the aircraft was towed
back to the gate.

The operator's maintenance conducted a visual inspection of both engines. A borescope of the
engine found ice accretion in the engine cores that restricted airflow. Engine performance runs
were subsequently completed with no faults found and the aircraft was returned to service. The
operator continues to consult with the aircraft and engine manufacturers. During the deicing
procedure, the CYWG weather was reported as winds of 040 degrees true at 11 knots, gusting to
17 knots, in heavy snow conditions, a temperature of minus 4 degrees Celsius, and a dew point of
minus 5.
