Good afternoon,
When you are working ground and sending aircraft to and from the runways, do you have specific routes you are mandated to give, or is it just a cultural thing that someone chose once and you all just do because everyone else does it that way?
Thanks

Re: Question for Ground Controllers
I have worked at both large and small airports in Canada. There is no "mandated" route at any of the airports I've worked at, but there is just common routing that works best for everyone. Think northbound on Alpha and Southbound on Bravo in YYZ. It makes no sense for each controller to have their own individual routing. Through trial and error and years of working, the most often routes used are the most efficient, which is why everyone uses them.
The active runway(s) also determine the most efficient flow. There is often a best route to get aircraft to one runway, but a totally different route (maybe opposite direction) to get them to another runway.
That being said, if there is a closure or a unique circumstance, any route is possible. That's where thinking outside the box really helps keep traffic moving.
