Looking for update info on MAEI for a Boeing guy

Post by PWJ58 »

I’m a bit unusual however I have a kid on the way and I’m really starting to think about lifestyle, spending time at home.
I live in Toronto, and I’m currently on the 767/757. About 3000 total time and 600 on type.
What would be the upgrade timeline at MorningStar for Captain/ hours per month flown? What are your typical pairings constructed like? I heard you can’t bid so are you unable to choose your days off? How long are your pairings typically? I hear there are YEG layovers and we have family there. Am I able to request those?
I’m genuinely looking for some MorningStar guys to answer it, i’m not hell bent on going to the major carriers. I’m realizing that quality life is pretty important for me. It seems like Morningstar is quite nice for that. Thanks in advance!

So you're at CargoJet I must assume? At least you'll be used to the nights.

It's just "Morningstar". Not "MorningStar". No biggie. Just a heads up. Upgrade time when I was there was about 2 years if you had the time on type. I believe they wanted 4,000 hours with 500 on type. I think it went as low as 3,500 hours if you had 1,500 on type but don't quote me on that.

Fedex doesn't fly on weekends or holidays. So you're only working during the week (for the most part). A typical pairing is leave late Monday night (10pm-2am), fly all night, spend the day in Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, or Montreal, sleep, then fly back to Toronto that evening. You get back around 3-5 in the morning. Most pairings were 3 days. Leave on Monday night, back home Wednesday morning for example. Or leave Tuesday, back Thursday. You'll have some reserve shifts thrown in there as well. On call from 10pm to 4am type of thing.

You can absolutely request days off but there's not much in the way of bidding. Just request your days off. I mentioned earlier that they don't fly on weekends but they do have scheduled weekends usually once every 4-6 weeks. Weekend trips are Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal. They're actually pretty decent. Get in Friday morning and leave either Monday or Tuesday evening. While you're in the hotel you're "off". You can go sight-seeing, see family, whatever.

You can request Edmonton layovers but I doubt the requests will be honoured. You more or less get what you get.
