Can someone clarify First Air's per diem policy for me. I belive that FO's (ATR 42) get an extra $12 per flight hour on top of their monthly base pay. Is this correct, and if so is this money a per diem, or is it taxed?
Thanks

I can't clarify it for you but per diems are supposed to be tax free.

no, not taxed, and although it has been a while since i was north of 55, i believe the extra is based on the Northern Living Allowance. You live anywhere considered "remote and North" (sorry, Redneck, Pickle lake doesn't count) you get more dough for your troubles.
Anyone correct me if i am mistaken.

First Air's payscale is based on a combination of base pay plus an hourly pay for flying time. The current hourly pay for ATR F/O is $12.38 (that's actually last year's rate but the new contract hasn't yet been rattified). Since this $12 is not a per diem and is a part of the pilot's salary it is taxed.

The meal allowances and per diems that the crews receive are not taxed.

Crews based in YZF also get an additioanl "Northern Living Allowance" of $500 / month. This is taxed.

edit to include northen living allowance info

What happened to the $50 per day north of 55 and $22 for FO while on rotation?

Those per diems are only applicable to the rotating (ie: YFB) crews. They still exist. The current rate (again, last year's rate since the new contract hasn't yet be rattified) is $70.86 for Capt and $28.35 fo F/O.

The above are per diems and are not taxed.

Actually Water Wings, you do qualify for northern living allowance in Pickle Lake. At least you did when I lived there. (mid 90's)
