What is happening to Sun#est in YYC?
I understand that they have had a huge number of pilots leave in the past 6 months, and only a few have left for WJ, AC, and Jazz. Why the rush out the door and is this the initial indications of a slide for the company? Thoughts or comments?

I was under the impression that Sun#est was a top notch company. They have certainly been around for a long time. They fly a bunch of nice iron, but it seems that the pilots are beginning to abandon ship. Is it the working hours, salary, or what? that is causing pilots to leave?

It had a great reputation when I first got there... but over the years, the truth has gotten out

I want to die like my grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming in terror like his passengers...

It's a good company to work at and they treat everyone well. Money is average, all the pilots are busy......very busy, guys/gals are leaving cause they're gettting offered more money and a better sched, simple as that.
As far as the bonding, everyone has an opinion. No one MAKES you sign, if you don't want to work there (if you don't already have a Type Rating) or you don't want to fly a different a/c than you're already Typed on, don't sign, simple as that.
Way to much pissing and moaning goes on here (Avcanada) and everyone knows it!

I'm guessing he's basing it on either being an employee of sunny homo or knowing one. There's a lot of unhappy people there and more than one person is telling me this.broompusher wrote:tincanflyer wrote:sun#est sucks! they treat their pilots like crap and run them like crazy.
And you're basing this on????

Dude, you have a nice thong. I've noticed a real trend towards hot babe avatars. Not that I'm complaining you know...
SW has been taking people for granted for a while. They are a good company, but stop short of becoming/ staying a great company. It's a top down a pproach really, management has been trying to fix it, but the ownership won't let them.
As long as they keep this up, large bonds and huge turnover will be the norm. Unfortunate really, considering their postion at the top of the food chain in the highly profitable white collar YYC market.
The people I knew there were run ragged and quit because they were working 12-18 hours every day, starting in the wee hours of the morning and coming home just in time to get exactly 8 hours sleep before repeating. Remember that if you fully reset at the hotel it isn't considered longer than a 12 hour duty day, so no 36 hours free after 3 12+ hour days.

For all you "industry experts" out there:
We all know that things are better for pilots now in terms of job availability. As the industry turns from "employer market" to "employee market" there are a few negative consequences that occur in such happy times. A major one that i've observed is general company morale. Let's be honest, it goes down the shitter. I remember the start of this latest hiring spree, everyone was happy because people were moving on, achieving that airline goal that many aspire to. Eventually this wears thin on the people not leaving, whether it be for personal reasons (3rd wife doesn't want to move to TO so you can make 35,000 a year), or an experience level (you don't have the time), or you don't care about an airline gig, you eventually feel left behind.
Another reason of low morale that i've discovered, is that the hard working good-at-their-job people become heavily relied on as the industry shifts from a experienced based lock down, to an influx of lower time people. These people sometimes get forgotten, because employer's are trying to cater to the new people, so they don't move on down the road either, which eventually causes your long-term employees to get pissed and bail.
Where i'm going with this, is that almost every mid-sized company in Canada (Sunwest, Borek, CMA, Cariboo, and several others not coming to mind right now) is going to feel the effects of low morale, justified or not.
I must congradulate this great expression of the original poster. Perhaps they've realized morale at their own company is dwindling, and wanted to see if this was happening elsewhere. It's a typical "uhhh, my FRIEND says it burns when he pees, what should he do?" scenario. For that matter, this thread could be about any number of companies, they just happend to insert "sunwest home" instead of "Kenn Borek Air", or "Cariboo".
That's my take. If you liked it, good. If not, I still win, because you just sat through all of this, and wasted your time.
Peace

Bingo! The bean counters are running the asylum right now and while the management are fairly decent, they're fighting an uphill battle. There've been a hell of a lot of sideways moves lately which should tell you something. That being said, sunny homo isn't the top of the food chain anymore; unfortunately the bean counters don't seem to realize that N Cariboo has surpassed them and they're going to freefall soon unless they get their poop in a group.
