OOPS... How about I attach the picture!!!

Post by studmuffin »

There is a pic of a Canso that dug a wingtip in 02 at Sitidgi Lake. It looks like an X Newfie gov't machine, but I can't pick out the registration. Anyone know the registration, and if she's still flying? I flew them back in the 70's and still have a fondness for the old birds.

Thanks

It could be any of the following but the registration looks like it ends with an E.

Studmuffin my source says that machine is still on the side of Sitigi Lake just out of Inuvik. The PBY’s are no longer being used for fire suppression and I would expect they will go to collectors keeping Cat Driver busy!

Dont mean to hijack but heres a question, if someone comes across a wreck what is the legality and morality in salvaging rights?

Good question Niss. I couldn't find the answer. I think savage rights only exist within the marine environment.

Take this example the of the above TBM. It crash landed on crown land. Crown Land is under the stewardship of two ministries in Ontario, for the most part it's the same across Canada.
If the crash presents an environmental problem like polution the MOE would mandate it be cleaned up at the aircraft owners expence. In this case the TBM was under MNR contract so there would or could be a pissing match over who would shoulder those costs.
If no hazard was present like this case... it still belongs to the owner H&L.
I think what happened is the MNR decided to just forget about it
Maybe CL Guy could tell who donated the engine was it H&L or did they just take it without seeking permission.

Heres a story about retriving a TBM from land owned by the Irving company.
Hope this helps answer some of your question. :D

We just took it!! I figured after almost 30 years if no one had claimed it, then it was just up for grabs and that is what we did.

I also have to clarify that after it was in Sault Ste. Marie, the engineer who was heading up the project contacted Dwayne Hicks Sr. from Hicks and Lawrence, told him what we were doing and what we had planned for the engine. He really liked what was happening and then provided a lot of the replacement parts, such as cylinders and exhaust stacks etc. in order to make it presentable for display in the Bush Plane Museum. As anyone that knew him knows, that is exactly what you would expect, a real class act when it came to aviation.
