Why?

Post by Dust Devil »

Why do people apply for First Officer jobs at places that don't have first officers?

Just a note if you sent in a resume asking for a first officer job your resume just went in the trash.

I'm guessing it's someone who's trying to break into the market and trying everything possible.

The question is Why do you really care?

I bet it takes a longer time to post this question of yours, than to just trash that CV.

p.s. I'm very impressed that you're in a position to review CV's. I bow in respect.

I totally agree that it is someone trying to break out in the biz. I ment it to point out the fact that it puts up a huge red flag that it was sent by someone who has no idea what the job is they are applying for. These kinds of mass applications and blah cover letters stick out like a sore thumb in my opinion. I notice the cover letters that actually talk about the buisness I am in.

And the reason I care is because there could be a great pilot out there who is going to get passed up because he doesn't realize that applying that way does nothing to get noticed and just gets filed with the rest of the bottom of the pile applicants.

Just trying to help Bob.

I agree, that the default cover letter does stick out.

Now that you rephrase and say you're just trying to point out what NOT to do, makes it comes across much better.

Don't you do Survey's DD??

Don't some survey companies have f/o's or observers?? So, maybe he thought you sprang for the extra crew....

The generic or mass cv sending is a vaild point...

But I'm sure if he put, I want to be a Capt at your place you'd still toss him the trash, because he probably doesn't have enough hours in the first place if his only goal is F/O.

PS. and a CV in the trash is better then being on one of the "pilots not to hire" future reference piles, because he didn't know what you did...

PSS. It would probably be better if operators(CPs atleast, I don't see why you'd care for some of these) started don't bother/hire them ever pile, for items like;

stated he'd buy a ppc.
stated he'd work for free.
stated he didn't know what your company was about..
etc.

In defense of the generic resume, it's not like a lot of the small mom and pop operators are routinely featured in the Globe and Mail business section.

My point being that the amount of info available isn't all that great, except for what you might find in Wings magazine.

A lot of companies don't even have websites, so what are you really supposed to say?

Of course if you apply to Dick's Pop and Potato Chips First Nations Delivery Service telling him you want to fly his 747, you might get a chuckle from Dick...

But c'mon... besides, hasn't it been proven that unless you're really high times resumes are basically a waste of time...

I agree resumes are somewhat of a waste of time. Sometimes something stands out though. And if I get a real hightime applicant I usually pass those ones up too.

That may have been valid 15 years ago, before the internet, but today, you can come on AvCanada and ask about the ops, you can go to PCC and check out their info and if you're really talented you can go to the TC website and check out their OC's, violations, Aircraft types, lord knows what else TC has up, think you might be able to look up their DOM, CP and all that other fun stuff too...

So to have little or no research done in todays day and age, is pretty sad.

Just erasing the name of the company and pasting a new name and faxing it out, probably won't work, and I think DD is right to be upset at the useless generic resumes.....
