Corvettes....the car.
Anybody own one of these? Been thinking of one since I was about 14. Been on a Harley most summers, but a Corvette has a roof! And an older Corvette can be had for about the same $$ as a Harley.
Looking for things I should be aware of. Years/engine combinations to be avoided? Any years famous for poor quality? It's either a Corvette, or a Lotus, or a Nissan 350Z...or a......or a?
But a Corvette will give me the "compensation" I need...hehe...there, I said it!

I'd be aware of all years and engine combos.... it is made by GM afterallDoc wrote:Looking for things I should be aware of. Years/engine combinations to be avoided?
Having said that, if I had the coin, I'd be tempted by the current model...
Love the spoiler mod on the Vette. Top it off with plastic wheel covers from Canadian Tire and you're ready to rip up the road.

Doc, get a grip - go to the kitchen and pour yourself a stiff gin and then go and sit down - stay there for a while, maybe watch some tv, and the feeling will pass. You'll feel better soon.
Happy New Year!

LOL, always love those Mustang guys. Having owned a mustang I must say you could probably take the Vet in a straight line but not all roads are prairie roads.kilocharliemike wrote:my vette killer...
Another note is that I have picked up many drivers of Mustangs off the side of the road. Probably because the are cheap cars (relatively speaking) and anyone can own one. Who in there right mine would give a kid a car with all that horsepower? I can't think of any accidents that I have attended that have included a Vette.
In terms of owning a car to stand out a little, I would go for the vette, every man and his dog owns a Mustang.

Don't get anything from the 80's. That's when the whole emissions thing came into crap on all the high horsepower cars.
Other than that you can have lots of fun for not a lot of cash.
Porsche, Lotus and pretty well all those imports are gonna cost more than your house to keep on the road. So although they are a blast they will kill you.
Looking forward a lilttle bit, you can pick up something like a BMW Z3 for 20-30G. But if I had that kind of cash, I'd find a 73 Vette and put new running gear in it and have a blast in a cool looking, reliable, nice to drive car.
Have Fun!

The Honda S2000 is pretty slick. I do like the Z3, but if I went to a BMW, it'd be a straight sedan...that's what they do best....an M3, perhaps?
Saw a Corvette with a six in it.....didn't know such a thing would be allowed out of Detroit?
As far as vet go....got to be a '73 or older....like chrome bumpers!

As my dad has a good friend who owns a vette specialty shop on Vancouver I can offer a bit of second hand advice.
1. Make sure the fiber glass is in good shape - bad glass no good
2. Make sure the fiber glass is in good shape
Other than that anything 70s vintage would be a 350 of one description or another. Infinite possibilities there. Gary tends to like the 383 stroker if a new engine is required for the stupid amount of torque it makes.

If you are looking into the 350z price range, then that must mean you want to spend $30 +. Well, I would pop for one of the 2 newest generation vettes. From 98+, basically they can't be beat for performance to cash ratio. The newer one get, the more power they have, And it drastically changes. In '98 it had 345hp, and now for 2007 the Z06 has 505hp. Choose wisely :p
Friend of mine bought a 10 year old M5 for about $12,000 and then put another $10,000 in it to tiddle it up - suck the doors off a Corvette and make instant friends in the BMW shops too! Tires will wear out as fast as the C. but the depreciation will probably stop. Room for the grand-kids and some golf clubs too. And you don't need to have anything to do with GM. Remember this is the same company that brought you the Cavalier, the Vega, the Chevette and the Firebird (post 1967).

Too bad they only made 2 of these in the Corvette and 69 of these in the Camaro. If GM would have made enough of these to constitute production vehicles, it would have made the Shelby Cobra look like a Volkswagon Beetle at the races.

If all your looking for is a good corvette, get the one you like the look of most. if your looking for a car that you can do some work to to go fast, go for the 90's style corvette. the small block in those cars isnt a powerhouse by no means, but the aftermarket for these cars is amazing! and the potential is there, plus these cars handle MUCH better than the old stingray cars. You can pick these cars up quite cheap because not many people like the style.
but the old ones are great because if you wana go for loads of torque for cheap, pull a 454 out of a truck and throw it in! they came from the factory with big blocks, and the trany's will bolt up with almost any GM engine. UNLIKE FORD!!
I'm not a huge vette fan, more of a sleeper car type of guy (Vega wagon with a 350 in it) they really make the mustang guys mad!

Subaru makes some good cars, but not to everybody's liking.
With its horizontally-opposed engine and AWD, the handling is known to be top-notch on all sedans.
There's a new Subary Legacy STi coming out, not sure whether it's going to be available in North America or it's JDM (Japan Domestic Market) only. It definitely will be something rare on the roads.

I know it's totally contrary to the Corvette philosophy, please forgive me
