Visiting the Knife

Post by oates76 »

Hey all, I'm just looking to get some tips from the guys and gals currently flying out of YZF. A friend and I are looking to head up this weekend to check things out. We're both coming to the end of our training, and both work for an airline, so interlining up there is not a problem.

So if we could get some tips on where to stay, what operators to check out that might be hiring low timers for right seat or ramp position in the next few months, and of course, any good watering holes. We'll just be in town all day this coming Sunday and Monday.

Thanks a lot.

YZF Is a great place. Id check out the 3 majors out of there Tindi, Arctic Sunwest, And buffalo. Make sure you check out Summit as well. Of the 4 Tindi and Summit are the best to work for. As for watering holes-The black night was my fav, but also check out the white fox and ofcourse Harelys :D Its been 2 years since up there, I'm assuming those places are still around.

Rumour has it that Tindi has openings for spring ramp positions. Head down to the floatbase on monday and ask for Trevor. Good company and the guys whether high or low timers will treat you well. Also visit Summit, really good company with good people.

bar of color the strange range and everytime I go into the knight I have a sore head, the only thng that sucks is you cannot smoke in the bars anymore so out you go. Pricey but the best meal in town will be Hallets in the old town, fish wild game and self serve beer home made fries

There is no such thing as Hallets...I think you mean Bullocks.

Definately check out Tindi and Summit. Both are great places to get your start and there are a tonne of great people at both. Good luck. PM with any other questions.

Thanks for all the tips guys. If you see a couple of lost looking Albertans wandering the streets, say hi.

Any ideas on a reasonably priced place to stay?

Thanks again

Northern Lights Motel or Red Coach Inn will run you 90 - 120/night. Do a B&B search for YK. They are usually not too busy in the winter and you get breakfast out of it. Cost is usually around 100.

So the Strange Range is still there...makes me feel a bit queasy just typing the name...there used to be a bar on the main drag where you went downstairs, the Mine Shaft or something? Full of creepy mining machinery? Good food and cheap too. Course, this was in the 80s!

Where to go,

Post by ClevelandSteamer »

Well, Buffalo is always looking for new help. Foodmail, Courier, or Airside, they may also send youto Hay River to do Ramp down their. They alll would lead to a flying position of you work hard for it and dont get in Joes way. Karen W. is the girl to speak with down their.

Tindi wil lbe a soild two years befor you get on the Be200 or Twin Otter, but the pay is decent and so is the time off, 4 on 4 off. Adlair would also be a decent place to start on the ramp although they just sent a few guys down south for BE200 Training for Cambridge.

I used to work at the White Fox, if you go their just dont piss off Willie (AKA Predetor) He will eat you and wip you with his braid Extensions.

Good place to eat...THE RED COACH!! No place ot stay in YK is Cheap, try Fraser Towers, I forget wat I was paying their a night but its also a good Joint.

YOu can gaurnteen yourself work at buffalo and most likely Tindi, I dunon bout other companies though.

And everybody knows everybody their so down try bieng a player....just a tip. ;)

Ciaoda!

Thanks for all the info guys. We had a great time there, short but sweet. All the operators we visited were great. Looking forward to getting the CPL finished off and getting up there.

Oh, and we did try Bullocks, best fish I've ever had... but almost crapped our pants when it was time to pay!
