This might have been talked about before.

I am getting pissed off with companies requiring pilots being French bilingual in order to qualify for a position with their company even though ICAO requires English..... blah blah blah

Should one just apply for the job anyways and maybe they would "look past" the "choice" I made to learn to other languages except French. I have noticed that some of these companies that require this the pilots have poor English speaking skills or heavily accented English. Should some of these jobs say if your not born in Quebec you need not apply because thats the vibe I get at times.

Sometimes I feel like moving to Europe (have a Euro Passport) and work there where my three languages (2 conversational 1 fluent) that I have are respected and not looked down upon because I cannot speak French. Even south of the US/Mexico border would have me. Is it not time for us "English only" speakers stand-up and say what about us and our rights.

This is a rant but I am getting tired of getting the short end of the stick in the aviation Canada world because I cannot say more that 'hello my name is...' in French.

As much as I hate the way Quebec deals with language in this country I can understand mandating knowledge of a language that your customers are likely to speak.

For example, bi-lingual road signs required in all of Canada EXCEPT Quebec! Try ordering a meal in Quebec english style - LOL! ICAO Ha Ha Ha , only country in the modern world that OK's multi language, sans english aviation communication!

I don't buy for a minute that it's a non-issue to safety.....I'm sure old PT is smiling in his canoe at our grief as he paddles his canoe through the endless hereafter !

How many french canadian pilots at WJ? There is much discrimination out there, on both french and english sides. You just have to apply where you feel you will be welcomed! But I agree with you that we should be evaluated equally for our competences.

It is a national language right? Thats no discrimination.. perhaps if they requested solely applicants with mandrin or punjab or swahili I could see there being a cause for it.

It's true that being french in Quebec is more important than multi PIC time. But the above applies to our whole country.

not to mention the upcoming "english language skill" test.....they'll hang a guy out because he may have an accent - but they continue to allow an entirely foreign language (french) to the vast majority of pilots.

Come on.....unless you are in small rural north of nowhere quebec the people are more then happy to serve you in english.....i have traveled all over quebec and never had a problem......

Yeah they probably hire french people in quebec, just like albertans hire more albertans etc... Its about communication, if you want to work there learn the language.

Also found that if you put in the slightest effort to speak it with quebecers they are twice as willing to make the return effort.

Would you travel to europe, or anywhere else and expect to be served in english probably not......

You missed my point re "goose/gander" - my only grudge is that in an apparently bi-lingual country - most things in Quebec are exempt, in fact I believe it's even ILLEGAL for a legitimate store owner to post his name/advertizing in english on the storefront! Once again - how does that fit into a bi-lingual society......and don't give me the crap about being their own 'culture".....imagine the demands if every culture in Canada demanded the same.

Enough of this anyway - it won't be fixed here and my views will only die with me afraid.

Pretty unsafe for a company with French SOP's to have French speaking pilots!

I've seen a few adds specifying French speaking pilots but never have I seen being from Quebec as a requirement.

I am very happy with the 3 languages I can communicate with.

I just dont see a point to have that requirement outside of Quebec. But I guess if you get federal money then you have to play by federal language rules.

Wrong, store owners can put up english signs if they want to, however the french one must be larger. Store owners simply dont want to waste money on making bilingual signs. I see anglophones pilots every day operating in Quebec. And blaming visible minorities of taking the white mans job is utter BS, just the sounds of desperation.

I know I started this topic but it was about French language requirement for some larger companies and not about being white or whatever.

A major reason pilots in Quebec are required to speak French is to just get along with the other pilots. Something we can't do on this board, and it's all in English? Quebec has it's rules. If you don't agree with them, simple, don't live in Quebec. Lots of jobs out there in English speaking Canada without the pain in the ass factor of living in Quebec. That said....it's still a great place to visit! The women are HOT!
