Post by queenofthenorth »

I am going to be a commuter and will be living in the Ottawa area and want some other commuter opinions , if it would be better to commute to Toronto or Montreal?

Commuting wise, both bases would be good. There is rapidair service out of YYZ, (flight every hour).

There are lots of flights out of YUL too, not as many as YYZ though. However it is only about an 1:30-1:50 drive to YUL. which may come in handy on those odd IROPS days when the flights are cancelled, or full, or when you finish late, etc. Plus you are looking at 0:20-0:35 min flight time to YUL, about 1:00 to YYZ.

Are you AC, Jazz. At Jazz we get quite a bit of YOW overnights on the Dash out of YUL. Not sure what the RJ or AC is like for layovers in YOW.

unless you are from Montreal (great city by the way) ..... take YYZ. Better sked, quicker advancement in terms of relative seniority.

Is this for Jazz or Air Canada? If it is for Air Canada, I'd suggest YUL EMJ F/O.

P.S. If anybody is wondering why, please read LOU 66 and bidding rights associated within the PG.

Why? So he could bid into a YYZ RP position?

I say go to YUL...like Dark Helmet said, better options. Lots of flights, shorter drive, shorter train ride.

The money is all the same for the first 2 years anyway, regardless of what equipement you are on, so bid for whatever is going to make your life the easiest. Trust me, I commute and it SUCKS!

We are talking about commuter lifestyle here. Going to YUL would give you the best option to check out which base/equipment will provide you with the best conditions.

For example, bidding YYZ R/P on the subsequent bid means that you would only be working about 8 days a month (2 4-day pairings). If you are making the same amount of money for the first 2 years anyways, might as well look for the easy lifestyle. Also, since this position is presently not being offered to newhires, you know that you would automatically be at 62% on the equipment.

Only non-YYZ-based Position Group pilots can bid into this position (non-PG pilots can bid into it, but it would involve a long-term freeze), therefore you know that no senior YYZ pilots will be bidding into this positon.

If you just want to fly and don't mind working 18 days a month on reserve, then YYZ A320 would be your choice.

Okay then, Personally I would pick in the followoing order.
YUL Dash
YYZ Dash
YUL RJ or YYZ RJ

Reason I say this, you will probably be able to hold a block sooner on the dash. Like I said, you will have more flexibility out of YUL like the option drive for example. Say you check the loads the night before and its look dicey, from YYZ your only choice is to fly.

There are a few pilots in YUL that commute to YOW, You will get more overnights in YOW out of YUL. You will get them out of YYZ too, but I don't think you sill see as many.

The RJ is a toss up. You are going to be reserve on both for a long time regardless. You will probably hold a block sooner in YYZ, plus from what I heard the flying is better there too. However, YUL is closer and you are just inside the 2 hour limit for reserve callout, So you might....again might be able to get away with staying home in YOW and driving in if you get called. YYZ you will for sure have to fly out the night before and stay in a crashpad.

Plus, say you want YUL and you get YYZ or vice versa, don't worry about it!!! You can make a commute work with both bases. Besides if you don't like the base you are on, you can always put a standing bid for the other base and get it within six months. Both bases are relatively junior so you should not have any problems getting it.

Good luck, and welcome aboard :D

Personally I would take YYZ RJ. Best variety of flying, and if you can hold even a junior block, a commute to YOW would be fairly easy.

You are assuming a 340 or 777 RP. I am on the 767 and have about 18 guys behind me. I am consistently getting 16 days a month. The '67 does more deadheads and at only half credit, it adds up.

Yes. To be more specific the B777 RP. Any YUL or YVR EMJ F/O & YVR RP can bid that position and find themselves very senior. YYZ PG pilots will be restricted from bidding that position.

The B767 RP is only good if you live in YYC, because it entails a lot of D/H to and from YYC (you get credited for staying at home).
