ANA grounds DHC-8's

Post by Jakob »

This isn't good news, do you think this is a problem with manufacturing or maintenance? I've never heard of any real quality issues with bombardier aircraft... certainly not helping the rep of canadian technology in the eyes of Japan.

Sounds like ANA has a crappy maintenance program, those are the kinds of snags you'd expect from a company cutting corners.

The writer of the Globe article could use a refresher in aviation terms as well..."the front landing gear on one failed to descend"?.

That's the first I've heard of Q400 problems. There's a bunch operating out there.

From Wikipedia

Series 400

In August 2006 a total of 117 Dash 8 Series 400 aircraft continue in airline service, with 50 further firm orders. Major operators include: Air Chathams (4), Air Freight NZ (5), Air Nippon Network (9), Air Tahoma (6), Augsburg Airways (5), Austrian Arrows (10), Flybe (24), Horizon Air (21), Japan Air Commuter (8), Kelowna Flightcraft (7), Nolinor Aviation (7), Scandinavian Airlines System (24), Sunstate Airlines (5), QantasLink (7), Jeju Air (5), Widerøe (3) and Colgan Air (15). Some 17 other airlines operate smaller numbers of Dash 8 Series 400.[2] Note: Air Panama is supposed to start flying two Dash 8s in January 2007.

Other

In February 2006, Porter Airlines announced that they had purchased ten 70-seater turboprops to service the Toronto Island Airport.

In September 2006, Frontier Airlines announced an order for ten Q400s, taking delivery of the first plane in May 2007. Frontier expects the total fleet to be in service by December 2007. Additionally, Frontier holds purchase options for 10 additional aircraft.

In February 2007, Pinnacle Airlines Corporation announced an order for 15 Q400s on behalf of its recently acquired subsidiary, Colgan Air. The aircraft will be operated in a "codeshare" agreement with Continental Airlines, under the Continental Connection banner our of their Newark, New Jersey hub.

Same technical problem by the same carrier makes it sure sound like a maintenance practice issue. They complained last year (I think) of problems with the gear although I think they've been the only ones to ever do so.

ANA grounds DHC-8`s

SAS Commuter and Widerøe in Scandinavia both had serious problems with the Dash 8 400 at first. It seems that the technical departments need a little experience with the machine on the line before everything goes as it should, but that`s not unusual with a relatively new type.
If I remember correctly, the Swiss launch company for the Saab 340 had so many problems that they sued either Saab or General Electric, or both.

Flybe also had a few Q400s go tech but the fleet seems to have settled down since.

Taken by itself, the article sounds dire, but to put it in context, is that a high number of failures for a fleet? Were they actual failures (except for the nose wheel), or snags? I think its a PR problem for Bombardier but likely not a big deal. All the new a/c will be on warranty anyway.
