Can I claim this on my tax return??

Post by rampking »

I got hired with a company last year that required me to front the training bond and they paid me back over the following year. With the exception of keeping a certain amount of money because of cost or some crock. Anyhow, I never recieved a tax receipt just a letter, after requested. Stating that I paid this much money for the cost of training in order to opererate type airplane as a fisrt officer. This airline is not an educational facility so I didn't think I could claim it under tuitionbut was wondering about professional dues??? Any PEI Air Pilots out there that have done this sort of thing???

Thanks all for the help

You should be able to write it off as a job expense; since you wouldn't have gotten the job without paying the money.

Tell us what company and why they retained your bond? Did you leave early?

You might claim it as an investment, but I'll bet they will laugh at you.

I never left, I paid them up front and they told me that they pay back this much they keep the rest for future training costs. upgrades, different ppc etc. Yeah I know we don't need to get into the whole ppc debate, I worked for 2 years straight on the ramp and couldn't get a job and was getting older and spent my last penny to get this job. In the end it worked out. I am just wondering about claiming this on my income tax return and getting some of my money back

Thanks again for the help

Hey, you should be able to claim this the same way as you claim you transport canada exams.

As mentioned above, I would enter it under the "employment expense" section. If you get audited, you could then explain the situation.

I'm pretty sure that doing it that way will deduct the total amount from the income you made from the year, giving you the best tax benefit.

As I understand it, you cannot write off the expense given that it is not recognized in the tax interpretation bulletins as an elligible expense. Just ask any former Jetsgo Pilot, they will tell you they tried to claim it and lost.

You can always fight this if you choose, however it will end up costing you more in legal fees than it is worth.

I know you can definitley claim meals away from home base, I think 1 every 4 hours to a maximum of 3 per day or $51.00 per day per 14 hour shift.

You CAN'T claim what you have been reimburised. You CAN claim what you have not been reimbursed.
