aircraft maintenance questions
Just a few odds and ends I'd like to have answered, and such.
The first is, the vacuum system main filter on my airplane has to be changed every 400 hours. The filter still has some 280 ish hours left on it, but the last time it was changed was in 1996. How often in terms of years should the filter be replaced?
Removing the wheel pants obviously affects empty weight and CofG. Does this require an amendment to the last weight and balance of the aircraft? If so, does this mean I have to redo an amendment everytime I remove or add the pants (none, mains only, nose only, all).
How often in terms of time should oil be changed? We all know 50 hours swap the oil, but what do you recommend? Say, every 50 hours or every 12 months, whichever comes first. The oil in my plane, while about 3 quarts have been added, has not been changed since April 2006.
Also, I read in a document from the type club that Champion REM37BY spark plugs should not be used in the Lycomming O-235-C2C engine. However, that is the type of plugs that are currently in the engine. What are the issues of this. Or reason why that certain plug cannot be fitted to this engine. Or was it just old data I was reading?
Finally, what is the best way to clean the plugs with the engine running. Everyone says just lean the engine, but at the same time, leanning too much could be destructive, and especially for my aircraft, they say not to lean bellow 3000 feet. Does this include no leanning on the ground? I have a weak cylinder compression (58/80) and my AME suggested it was perhaps carbon from lack of flying (Less than 30 hours in 2006, and less than 50 hours in 2005).
Thanks for you time,

I assume your a/c is VFR general aviation!! That being said, look at you vacume filter- change if it looks dirty- most do not.
Weight and balance needs to be ammendend any time you change the configuartion of your a/c. If you regularly fly in two different configurations, have a weight and balance sheet set up for each set up and note which is in effect in your log book!
Any shop with vendor catalogue can look up the recomended plugs for your engine, Failing that look up the type certificate on the FAA web site, it will specify what types are approved.
Plug are best cleaned by your AME out of the engine, lead deposits will not remove themselves not matter what you do. Oil fouling may be cleaned up by a good lean ground run, but watch your CHT's, agian best to fix whats causing the problem.
Oil change should be done annaully as a minimum. Acids build up from lack of use, good oil is the most bang for your buck as far a maintenace goes and should never be skimped on. In fact if your engine does not have a full flow paper filter, it should be changed every 25 hrs.

Old enough to know better, too young to quit
rfcpilot weren't you trolling before about doing maintenance yourself? How about you take your aircraft to a local AMO and support the industry. A good AMO will be happy to help you out with your questions. If you are overly tight with your cash, owning an airplane is not for you.
mapledell... my aircraft has been to an AMO. Twice. And is scheduled for another trip there before the weekend.
Also, you really have to realize there is a difference between doing maintenance yourself, and trying to be a penny pincher.
Why dont I ask my AMO? Well, it's much easier to ask online and get different opinions.
fixorfukit, the vacuum filter.. to me looks clean. But my AME said it needed replacement. Just in case someone else wants to say Im just a winy pilot... the filter is getting replaced. But when the part is protecting hundreds of dollars of instruments, better safe than sorry.
On the note of W&B, thats good then, the 2nd amendment (done in 2006) to the original weight and balance (done in 1992) has all wheel pants on it, and the 3rd amendment (done last week) has only the nose wheel pant on it. So I guess Im set then. heh.
I try to run my aircraft leaned on the ground a fair bit. I've heard leaning until the point that you cannot develop full power. But that sounds like it would keep the engine quiet toasty.
I'll do some more checks on the plugs though, when my AME did a compression test, he didnt make any comments on the blugs. Then again, it might not have been something he could notice.
One more thing that I forgot to mention. Pitot Static test. Im told is the same thing as an 'altimeter calibration test'. Is it? The Pitot Static test according to the CARs must be done every two years on airplanes ONLY in Class B airspace, or flying IFR. My aircraft is purely VFR. This would mean that the check is not required. I always get told it has to be done though. Now, of course, it would make sense to test it, but its a huge inconvenience to get someone to come over to do the check (considering at present I only have one day off a week). And of course, if I dont do the check it means I have 100 dollars of fuel in the tanks rather than in someone else's pocket (say what you want about this comment, I dont care).

rfcPilot;
I watched this thread climb to just under 90 views without an answer and was sorry to see that somebody finally did. What a shame that people who are fortunate enough to own aircraft are seeking their maintenance information on an open forum such as this. At he end of your last post you say that "you don't care", unfortunately, that seems to be the case.
Now your AMO is going to have to put up with your bitching about costs because of what you have taken from this site. If it was our AMO, I know where I would be telling you to go.

rfcpilot,
The internet is a great place for information. However with your posts you come across as if you are going down a snag sheet handed to you by an AME and looking to pick it apart with information given here.
Looking for second opinions for aircraft maintenance on the internet seems pointless to me. I would suspect if you walked into an AMO and said "but I read on the internet that...." you will quickly go on the "pain in the ass" customer list.
I hope you can find a good friendly AME near you who can answer your questions.

Sheesh...the guy is just asking for a little advice. If you don't know the answers or don't want to answer then don't respond. The guy isn't holding a gun to anyone's head.
There's nothing wrong with a guy seeking advice and knowledge from other owners and maintainers. Let's face it, there are unscrupulous AMEs out there too that will replace EVERYTHING if they go unquestioned. A little good will goes a long way. Poor attitudes, like the ones demonstrated on this thread just create anomosity.
Do you folks actually think this owner is more inclined to deal with AMEs now? I think not.

haha!
Am I holding a gun to anyone's head? umm no but Im sure if you want that could be arranged.
Well lets see. I have AMEs and probably some working with AMOs online here telling me to politely f*ck off and just send my airplane into the shop, have it come back a week later with a bill for work I dont know what happened? Sorry mate, dont work that way.
And if thats the way you work, I pitty the pilots who send you their aircrafts.
On that note, next time you have computer troubles, bring it to me, I'll fix them. I wont tell you what I did, but I expect you to shut up and hand me the money I charge you. Right? Wrong! World dont work that way. (On that note, what DO you do when you take your computer into the shop? I bet you ask questions right?)
Does this make me any less comfortable with AMEs and AMOs now? Nope.
mapledell, yes, I was kinda going down a "snag sheet" off a pre-purchase inspection, some of the items were fixed, some were not. Some are in the process. Do I want to spend money on maintenance if I dont have to? Hell no thats money I could place into my tanks. (refer to my question about pitot static). The question doesnt come to, am I short on cash and want to rip the AME off. The question comes to, if I dont ask, the AME WILL rip me off. And thats money I'd rather spend on flying, than on some mechanic. Face it.
Its the same in the computer business. You take you computer into the shop. Sure I'll fix it! I'll also charge you a pretty penny. Oh wait, you came into the shop and you knew the problem and wanted to know the fix? Oh gee, guess that means I cant over charge you or replace items that arent defective. Trust me, I've worked in those shops.
As for the original content of this post, I asked questions... somehow I expected answers. Guess maybe some of you here are too (insert not-so-nice word here) to see that. Wait I gotta pay you for information right! haha.
And for the tards who keep bringing up money. Look, I know you guys are money hogs and all (insults aside now) but where did I mention cash in my first post!! Oh wait, I DIDNT.
Cant answer my questions? Dont waste your time posting here. Im sure theres an aircraft in your hangar you could work on and make money, since it seems thats mostly what you're interested in. Right?
/ends rants haha

RFC pilot...
You knew from your last topic the "abuse" you would be subjected to. So my question to you is this... Why post another topic? Given your absolutely disturbingly low oppinion of AME's, why bother us here!? Just curious though... do you call your AME a "money hog", or do you treat him as one? In the distrustfull " your only after MY hard earned money, your just out to gouge ME, I don't BELIEVE that that really has to be done to my aircraft" manner? If so I am sincerely surprised that he has not told you to take yourself elsewhere... I know I would.

Again I wonder why it seems most of you here care more about money you get than the planes you are asked to maintain... *shrugs*
The "abuse" I dish out here? Well, its about the same that I receive here. Not happy with it? Like I said, dont post. Low opinion of AMEs? Not so much. Only a low opinion of people interested in making money.

I wonder if rfcPilot and CID are the same person..
It seems they both are cut from the same cloth..
I believe the smart thing is to ignore both of them. If we answer them, we only empower them. If we ignore them, hopefully they will go away.
Please do not answer either one of them.

Why is everyone so touchy?
I am an AME, but I have not worked on the small stuff so I don't know any of those answers.
But reading all these posts is quite funny. I too do not like the idea of owner maintained aircraft, but I also don't work on those airplanes, so really I don't care.
But if I was to take my car into the shop for a Ontario safety or an out of province inspection, and they made up a huge list....and I was not so sure about any of the items, why would I not ask questions on the internet.
I work on my car but I am not an auto mechanic, am I undermining that industry?
Informed is the only way to be. When I am working on a plane and the pilot doesn't ask a bunch of questions about what I am doing or why, it makes me shrug my shoulders...
AM I missing something? remember I don't work at an AMO that specializes in small general aircraft, such 172's.

Don't be disgruntled....move on!
It's really quite simple rcfpilot. I believe in paying professionals for their time. Doctors, Lawyers, Accountants, Auto Mechanics etc. If I am not satisfied with the work, advice or quote from one professional I get a second opinion from another, and expect to pay for their time.
Well in case it wasnt made obvious (by the fact that I said my plane went in the shop twice and was going in again...) I too believe in paying a professional to do his or her job.
I also believe in expanding my own knowledge about the subject at hand, in this case, the workings of my aircraft. This way I can more so enjoy flying, I can more so enjoy watching the maintenance being done, and I can ensure I am not being taken advantage of by said professional. Not saying my AME is corrupt, but we all know how it works. Those whom are oblivious get taken advantage of and those in a suit and tie get a bigger bill.
Now, do I believe in paying for your time while people answer (and in my case, argue) here on the internet? Not at all. Second opinions are a great, but I believe they are free. Has the world really come to the point where help is not given unless there is a monetary reward?

Pilots who have a better understanding of their equipment abuse their aircraft less resulting in safer flying with less snags. So help the poor guy learn. Perhaps you should quit whinning if there is someone else who is more interested in learning than you. Oh, just for the record I am in AME not a pilot.
You can disagree if you like. I would just challange you to get off your backside and learn something new, if your lucky someone will answer you questions

folks there are some AMES (aircraft mechanics not engineers,, Ever seen an ame with a P.ENG ?) that fleece customers as bad or even worse as car mechanics....
ESPECIALLY in the private vfr airplane area!!
I know of several aircraft owners that have paid over two grand for an annual inspection that consisted of an oil change!!
Give the guy a break for trying to disect the snag sheet!

rfcPilot? Sorry, gotta say it! You are such a LOSER!!! You're the type of private A/C owner that every AMO and Engineer dreads to see!!! If you or your so called aircraft ever crossed my hanger doors I'd send you packing!!
My God I pity your present AMO (Engineer)!! I'll bet he is pulling his hair out, thinking, "How can I get rid of this ASSHOLE"!!!!
You chose to buy an aircraft, and obviously you didn't do your homework, so don't expect your AMO (Engineer) to subsidize your hobby. AMOs are in the business to make money, not subsidize your little hobby!! Get real, for Christ sake!!! And PLEASE, don't make any more posts here, you're just pissing everyone off!!!

Ouch. Which way are you leaning on this argument splitpin? I am not quite sure. LOL. Actually I agree with you.
Different strokes for different folks. I consider it professional courtesy to not go out of my way to ask for free adivce from colleagues that work in another profession.
If you are not happy with your current AMO try another one. Some folks on here have been dealing with penny pinching private pilots for years and it has made them a little jaded. It's understandable afterall when most GA people are happy to pay $85/hr to have their car repaired but argue over $60/hr for their plane.
And stop saying that your plane has already been to an AMO TWICE. As if that has any significance. It will be there many many more times. You do sound very out of place. It is not your car! Buying the aircraft is the cheap part. Maintaing it is the expensive part.

Just re read this and it explains a lot.. He/She is a troll and I would bet that it is the same persona as CID..

Do not reply to this person as it will only empower them to critisize whatever you say.. They are just here to start shit...

Wow some of you guys are idiots... how you got the AME stamp.. I dont want to know who's wank you sucked.
splitpin.. If you are an AME simply for the money, you're in the wrong business. Go become a lawyer. If you can make it through university that is...
For if I were to deal with someone, my attitude would probably be along the lines of "Here is my problem, this is how you will fix it, this is how many hours it would take a competent person to fix it, this is your hourly rate. A+B=C. Therefore if you send me a bill any higher than this estimate I've made, I'll give you the money I think it would cost, take my plane and say see ya"
Do I intend on wasting money on a money-hogging AME? F*ck no. That money is a lot more useful in my tanks than it is in his hands.

Thats exactly why I'll never deal with you. Or any AME/AMO that follows that motto.AMOs are in the business to make money,

Holy Sh-t!!. You are an oddball!! Lets just analyze your post.rfcPilot wrote:Wow some of you guys are idiots... how you got the AME stamp.. I dont want to know who's wank you sucked.

1) splitpin.. If you are an AME simply for the money, you're in the wrong business.
Why the hell would I be in the business (48 years) if I couldn't make money? Contrary to what you may think, AMEs are in the business to make money, not subsidise your hobby. On the same token, I wonder how many real Pilots on this site fly just for the sake of flying! As far as I know they all want money. (although I will admit most of them don't get paid anything near what they are worth!) There are thousands of occupations out there and as far as I know they are all paying money for services rendered. Does your money belief apply to all occupations (including yours) Sound a little strange to me.
2)Thats exactly why I'll never deal with you
Don't worry about that. You won't get within a mile of my doors, or my staff!
3)"Here is my problem, this is how you will fix it, this is how many hours it would take a competent person to fix it, this is your hourly rate.
Yeah Right! Lots of luck on that one! Would you pull the same stunt on any other repair facility? Automotive, Boat, or how about a Doctor, Lawyer, Dentist, or what if someone pulled that stunt on you? I'd love to see your reaction! Why don't you walk into a Meat Market and tell the Butcher what you are going to give him for his steaks! Rotsa Ruck!
4)Therefore if you send me a bill any higher than this estimate I've made, I'll give you the money I think it would cost, take my plane and say see ya"
How are you even remotely qualified to "estimate" how long a task will take to do on an aircraft? You're not very clued in on the realities of business are you? Ever heard of a Mechanics Lien? Very effective tool to deal with guys like you. Especially when there is also a big honkin' chain locked around your prop!! I've had to resort to that myself once or twice, believe me, it works well.
My suggestion to you is, take a deep breath, and think very carefully about your attitude towards AMEs and AMOs. Otherwise I predict a very rocky road for you in dealing with them in the future. Trust me on this one, it won't take long for the word to spread. All the AMOs in this area have a "list" and the people on "the list" have a very difficult time getting any work done. It's usually to the back of the line, cash up front, among other things. It's not a good spot to be in. Think about it rfcPilot!
Oh yes, and about the university comment. I went though 7 years of aviation engineering long before you were even born.
splitpin,
I agree with what you say. There are definitely undertones of inexperience in rfcPilot’s tirade. Unfortunately this thread has devolved from a polite post with a simple set of questions to a the classic AvCanada jello-westling match.
If people would simply answer or politely decline we wouldn’t have gotten down here in the gutter. I’m sure his hostility is just a reaction in kind.
Having said that…
rfcPilot,
People work for money. Get over it. Find a good honest AME, use good judgment when negotiating work and fork some over. Ask all the technical questions you want but try to lose the hostile attitude. There’s enough hostile attitudes around here already.

That I have noticed hostilities. Then again, its pretty much like that all over the internet. But I dish out as much as I receive. That being said, if some people dont cool it, neither will I.
splitpin, I believe in values I suppose. I believe someone would be an AME because they like to fix engines or work on airplanes. Actually, probably both. I believe a doctor enjoys and gets satisfaction by helping others and preventing deseases and whatnot. I fly my airplane because I love to fly. I dont get paid for it. Partly because I dont have my CPL yet, and partly because you'll never see me work for an airline for the intention of getting paid. (those guys dont really "fly" anyways) I like my freedom of flight. But alas, the world has indeed become contaminated by currency. No one does something because they like it anymore.
But being an AME for the money, thats really not the best way to go. A car mechanic can make more money, a doctor, a dentist, a lawyer, can all make more money. Heck my neighbour who has a few Microsoft certificates in his back pocket charges 125 dollars per hour to clients for his services. That money goes DIRECTLY into his pocket. Less expenses for fuel to get to his client, which at worst is a 30 minute drive. That sounds like a much better way to make money than what I've seen in the AME wage poll.
Now I dont own a vehicle, then again I dont really want to, driving is expensive and boring and I'd rather put the money in my tanks than in a car, gas, and parking passes. But there is a difference between a smart person going to the shop, and the typical "I dont care thanks" going into the shop. A smart person, knows the problem. Has a good idea of the solution, and can estimate the costs. The dummy on the other hand says "heres my plane, fix it, bill me" In the first senario, the mechanic has to do the job. If the bill comes in and the client isnt happy or feels he/her has been cheated, its simple. Either argue to have a reasonable price, and then never return, or the more passive person will foot the bill and never return. Either senario has the mechanic with one less customer. I guess with your attitude, its probably for the best.
How am I remotely qualified to "estimate"? Im not. Then again I never said I was. Read slower next time. Its easy to walk up to someone, be it an AME, car mechanic, computer technician, etc, and get their opinion on a job that needs done. Computer tune up? 50 bucks an hour of actual work. Installation of a new power supply? half hour of labour. Now if I get it done and get billed for two hours of labour for that, you know I wont pay. I dont like being ripped off, and I wont take that crap either.
That AMEs and AMOs have a list, well duh, everyone does. Even I have my own personal list of "I hate this person I like this person" And you do too. But I know where I stand with my AME, and I know a few other AMEs and we've good relationships. That bad relationships have to turn up here because AMEs would like to be paid to answer some questions... thats retarded. Why bother with a Maintenance forum if all you folks do is bicker. Something I've seen in almost every thread here... *sigh*
