How many years to 100K?
Just wondering if in the long term becoming a pilot is worth it? Please reply with appox. hours at the time. Thanks.

10 years is too short. In most cases you will take longer. There is no direct correlation between hours and dosh - e.g. firebombers only fly 140 hours a year on average but get paid pretty good. If you stay on a float plane you will never hit $100k (I don't think) but you will have lots of hours.
Bill Gates has 2 jets - you can fly his way.

"What's it doing now?"
"Fly low and slow and throttle back in the turns."

It took me 24 years going the instructing bush route. I always made the mortgage payments, had food on the table, and occaisionally took vacations.
I could have used the money earlier I suppose, but I have had a hell of a lot of job satisfaction in the last 25000 hours.

sorry, but this is a slanted poll and I don't think it is logical.
Most people in 703 and 704 operations will not see $100K within 10 years.
Heck, some of us never made it in 40!!!!
It also does not account for the sliding scale of inflation. When I was young, $40K probably equated to 100K today, so it is all subjective. I just looked at an AC pay scale and most of them don't get to 100K until 10 years into their term.
Still, if I de-retired myself and lived for another 40 years, maybe I could do it. Maybe inflation could overtake the miserliness of employers and get me there!
Good luck, and budget well!!!

Don't feel too bad. It took me a lot longer to crack 29K. My timing was perfect with regards to 911. I had to instruct for more than 4 years and was making under 20 k for that time. Of course I was doing other jobs to supplement my income. Then I went to Voyageur and we all know that if there is one thing that is more closely guarded than the Crown Jewels, it is any escalation in the the pay rate at Voyageur. It took me 7 years to crack 30K and bitter as hell about it. Absolutely love flying, but hate the raping one has to go through to get anywhere in this industry. Yeah I sound pretty bitter don't I? Well you can see why.C-HRIS wrote:It's taken me 3 years to crack $29,000
Cheers!!!
p.s. In the game 8+ years and haven't cracked the 100K yet, but things are starting to looking up.

boy did you screw up that poll... how about, cut loose with a commercial multi IFR in 1993 and this year my T4 was in the 80's... but I'm going to break the 100k barrier by mid year! Finally!
So to recap... about 15 years. Where's the spot to check off 15 years? hmm?
