Any private planes for rent in Calgary?
Does anyone know of anyone in the Calgary/Springbank area that has an airplane I could rent from them for a couple of hours? Just looking for a 152/172 or something similar that I could go scooting around in. Even a light twin, if the price was right. Anyways, I could easily contact a flight school, but I'd rather help a private owner pay the bills than some of the villain flightschool owners. Thanks.

Villian flight school owners?
Last time I checked, most flight school owners were not making their living from their school. If anything flight schools these days are a write off financially. Maybe if renters would actually rent from flight schools rather than going around under the table, we would see rental rates stabilize.
Before you blast me, think about this:
Rental rate for a 152 $90/hr
Fuel: $24/hr
Maintenance: $15+/hr
Engine overhaul: $12/hr
Hangarage/storage: ?
Unforseen maintance and improvements: ?20/hr??
So we are at $71 per hour and haven't even paid for our $4000 insurance bill per year, or for interest on the initial investment into the aircraft. Or what about our time to prepare the aircraft for you with full fuel tanks and a clean windshield?
At 20 per hour it takes 200 hours to pay the insurance. So if a airplane like a 152 doesn't put at least 200 hours on in a year it doesn't break even for a school (let alone the interest on the initial investment). The more hours we put on in a year, the cost per hour goes down. Then maybe the flight school owner can make a whopping $5 per hour on his $30 000 - 70 000 investment.
So if we have people who go out and rent privately, they are just compounding the problem. If the aircraft were being used, the cost per hour for insurance would go down. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that.
The problem is that once a guy is licenced, he figures he shouldn't support his local flying school, and then when he wants to upgrade down the road or do recurrency training mandated by an insurance company, he finds that the flight school had to close its doors. I wonder why.

I think it could depend on the school and the environment there. 172driver made some good points but what about schools where rental apart from for instructional purposes is difficult. Charter ops can make it difficult to rent as can minimum daily charges (which makes sense from the companies perspective) or just a busy school. The FTU where I did my training was originally a flying club where rentals were regular occurrences but it gradually died down as the university program grew and took over the school. Even students from outside the university program have a hard time finding time slots for a/c. I think there is room for both - its good to help both a private owner AND a club keep their costs down.
Its funny how the same people are always talking about the "crooked school owner". Im not sure how a flying school owner could be crooked, there is virtually no profit to be "crooked" with. I don't know about other owners, but I sure don't drive a BMW around, and my salary must be made elsewhere (read many hours put into managing a flight school for free). I made more money when I was a lowly Class IV instructor, (oh, those were the days) in fact I made about 5X as much in a year that way.
Unless you cut back on all the necessary maintenance items as an owner, in which case renters will see that in the aircraft, and Transport Canada is always soon to follow.
Insurance companies, Fuel corporations and aircraft parts suppliers are the only crooks in this business (maybe add lawyers into that depending on your viewpoint). That doesn;t change whether you are talking a commercial airplane or private. The cost to fly never gets less, and we have these corporations to blame, not the "crooked" flight school owners who are just trying to serve the flying public.
Blastor, try researching a little bit next time instead of trying to live up to your obvious nick.

The guy who owns the convenience store down from my house doesn't drive a BMW to work either..
He makes 20cents on a chocolate bar..
He picked to run a store, that's what he's doing..
People picked to be pilots and people chose to open up a flying school.
Everyone stop complaining...

Don't call the flight school owners "villains."
The only people who can be chastised on this site are a small handful of TC employees..
