Have they recalled the furloughed pilots from earlier this year?

I guess this is where 757FO chirps in.

Interview Tips

Post by B757FO »

I see this is an old post but none the less here is the info you are asking for.

The do not hire direct entry captains. However they do hire contract captains in past winters to help with the busy periods.

The Interview is straight forward. There are 2. First one will be probably with flt ops management. Panel interview involving HR, training pilot and pilot manager or representative. Interview is based on scoring 1 to 5 for each question. Total score will place you in a pool. Pool is in order of score. Then the pool is called top to bottom for second interview with President and VP flt ops probably but this may not be the case. They give the final decision on who is hired or not.

Questions are non technical in nature. Tell us about you. What experiences you have had. Why skyservice. etc. Describe yourself or situations you have been in in a cockpit. How did you deal with it. You know the typical stuff. I would suggest that you prep your self before the interview. ie sit in front of the mirror etc.

We are not told for what airplane types they are hiring but it will be either for the a320 or the b757.

To sort out the issue on the furloughs.
In April 2006 we were issued layoff notices 20 pilots dated for April 31st,2006. On April 18th these furloughs were recinded. Again this year March 2007 we were issued furloughs for 15 pilots. Due to the fact that YQB based closed. Now we do have 6 pilots on furlough however they are all ex retired Canadian airlines and Air Canada 767 captains who were forced to be hired versus a contract position because we do not allow more than a fixed amount of contractors per season to be hired so they hired the AC guys full time and put them on the bottom of the seniority list and being told that they would be laid off come April. This is what has happend. The company originally furloughed 15 then dropped this to 6 who are th AC guys. So to answer your question the 6 guys furloughed will be recalled in the fall but perhaps earlier who knows.

As per any contract all furloughed pilots will be recalled prior to any hiring so if you are being called that will answer your question.

As for the pay our contract has been ratified and will be going out to vote but till those figures are available the old contract pay is in place so pay is 61,100$ per year goes up every year I believe tops out at 90k salary and then the usually per diem stuff.

Be aware that the deployements are a part of life here at skyservice.
Hope this helps.

Few questions. Do the Captains top out at $90K? Or is that FOs? If it is Captains topping out at $90k, how much does it work out to with per diems?

About the deployments, what does that mean? Does it mean that you may be told with short notice that you'll now be based out of such-and-such city? How often does stuff like that happen?

Thanks for any information you have.

Goose,

Captains top out in the high 150's. If you deploy to the uk bases in the summer, then salary increases dramatically. Lots of overtime at 1.5.

Deployments are avail every year, from May to Oct. You can bid for deployment, or fly pairings out of your permanent base - current max 20 days. Pairings are awarded monthly. You can bid to deploy for 1-6 months.

Wow, thats awesome. Heck, I would have been fairly happy topping out at $90K, but $150K is amazing. My career goal is to get on with skyservice because I've heard/seen that the lifestyle is great, (home almost every night).

I bet it would get very interesting taking a contract overseas for the summers. But is that always optional? Or if you are very junior, could you be forced to take an overseas contract?

Also, do you have a choice which aircraft you fly? Or do you get put on whatever they are hiring for at the time?

Sorry for so many question, but like I said earlier, it is my career goal to wind up with skyservice. I've heard nothing but good things about the company and from talking with many of their pilots, (when I fueled at YYZ), it sounds like the company I want to wind up with. Thanks again for all the information!

Before you apply you should know that you will be deployed for several months a year every year until you retire. You will either choose to go 1 - 6 months and/or be sent up to 3 weeks every month between may and november.
This works out OK for single guys renting. However, factor in family, school, friends, and home upkeep/care and it is not so good. However, great co-workers and fun flying.
Good luck and good choices.

Aw, man. Thanks for pissing on my parade. I thought Skyservice was going to be an amazing fit for my desired lifestyle, but maybe not.

Oh well. I guess its not all bad. Deployments can't be all that bad, especially if you can take your family. I still plan on applying when I get enough time.
