Five people survived a crash after their plane flew into a wooded area in northern Newfoundland Tuesday, police said.

A Beaver float plane crashed near Hawke's Bay on the Northern Peninsula, about 260 kilometres north of Corner Brook.

The plane suffered "significant damages," said RCMP communications official Helen Escott, although all on board survived.

There was no immediate word on the condition of the survivors.

The plane is owned by Leonard Payne, an outfitter based in Portland Creek.

The RCMP said the plane had been flying from Raft Pond, near Hawke's Bay, to Mary's Harbour in southern Labrador.
The RCMP is investigating the crash.

Escott said the Transportation Safety Board has been notified of the crash
