In really simple terms the Navajo hauls a better load. The 340 is pressurized. So, if you need to get over the vertical real estate in BC maybe the 340. Otherwise I'd take the Navajo.

Well if you fill the 340 up with fuel, better leave your lunch behind. You'll be over gross. Well perhaps a banana and some trail mix. I would choose the Navajo. You will find they are much more popular in the charter world than a Cessna 340.

The Cessna 340 is pressurized, the Navajo is not.
The Cessna 340 is a bit delicate, the Navajo is not.
Very few Cessna 340's in the charter market.
Lots of Navajo's.
The Navajo will haul more people farther than a Cessna 340.
The Cessna 340 will give what few peple it can carry a more comfortable ride in summer turbulence or in the mountains because it can fly higher without having to wear oxygen masks.
The Cessna 340 was very basically a pressurized Cessna 310. A lot smaller airplane than a Navajo. It is like comparing a mini van to a dually diesel bus. Depends what you want to do with the airplane.
Do not have a clue what each cost to own or operate.

Of course, one would have to look at exactly what the mission and typical loads are, as both aircraft mentioned may not be the right choice. Both have restrictions as others do also.

Oh, you can get a P Navajo. It's pressurized. But, you don't want one. Hangar Queens. JS speaks the truth. The 340 with full fuel will take two pilots, and a small dog....that's IT.

Just study the performance specs for each airplane you are considering and pick the one best suited to your needs and your wallet.

Like they said, the 340 and 414 for that matter have almost no useful load. You should be comparing a 402 to the Navajo, but even still the piper has more useful load, can hold more ice, and can take more of a beating.

That said the cessna product has more range and goes 10-20 kts faster.

If you want to go high and fast, with you and one passenger, go 340. If you want to take 2000 lbs of pop and potato chips into a 2000' strip or take 10 pax, go navajo.

Come on co-joe that is stretching things a bit. While the Navajo is a good aircraft you will not get a fully loaded Chieftain out of 2000 ft. In the Chieftain the max passenger seating is 9, 7 for the baby Navajo and that is very cozy arrangement.

The 414A with the VG increase gross weight carries a respectable load.

Email me at cigayi@yahoo.ca if you are interested in a C421 that's going on sale for a comperable price to either a C340 or a Navajo. Was used in charter and now corporate. Has VG kit for gross weight increase. Can carry a good load a reasonable distance and is pressurized.
