It is will known that the SR20/22 has a substantially higher accident rate than the GA average (google it).

I will leave it to the experts here to speculate as to why this is so.

I was going to say, isn't the SR22 one of those fancy new air taxi type craft?

It's a newer generation, single engine piston, 4-seater, made mostly of composite....but it has a ballistic emergency parachute that can be activated by the pilot in the event of an engine failure, allowing the aircraft to float down to the ground.

Many have speculated that the parachute gives pilots extra courage to go into situations they shouldn't, or also, that it is sometimes deployed when not totally necessary, resulting in destruction of the aircraft when it most likely could have been saved....there are many arguments surrounding the use of this technology (for and against)...I think this is what Hedley refers to above.

Condolences to the family.

I think the thing flies too fast for the rec pilot. They can get into a lot of trouble real fast.

I have quite a few hours on SR22s and have seen my share of "weaknesses" of the aircraft and its pilots.

Now I have no idea what has happened and cannot and will not comment on the crash, but I will explain the issues I have come across.

First Widow I have heard rumours that owners have been approaches by a company looking to Lease their aircraft for use in a charter company.

Next the plane isn't certified for known icing and if you aren't prepared before incountering ice you can have difficulty shedding the accumulated ice with the TKS system.

The Avidyne/Autopilot system takes a lot of managment and have seen the pilots get disoriented very quickly when the system doesn't get programed properly.

Finally most of the owners are low time/simple aircraft time and get behind the aircraft easily.

Just observations, with the proper training and experiance the SR22 is a great aircraft and rather simple to fly.

I instructed Jean in St. Paul a few years ago. He was passionate about aviation (I think it ran in the family), a natural in the air, and he had an unstoppable positive attitude. In 2200+ hours of instructing, he was one of my favourites.

He called just last week to say he was in town - to bring coffees out so he could show off his new Cirrus. I couldn't make it. He was supposed to be back this week for a rain check.

My deepest condolences to his family, particularly his 5 children.
