Music and Flying

Post by bmc »

Just had to share this. My two passions outside of family are flying and music. Saturday, my band played a gig out in corn field. I knew it was next to a local airport but I didn't know it was about 400 off the end of the sole runway, nor that there was a fly-in in progress.

The 1,800 foot grass runway ends at the road. It's well sign posted to look both ways before proceeding along the road. The field across the road has small bush, roughly 10 feet high for about a hundred feet before the land drops down about 25 feet to lower ground. Field elevation is 1,250 feet and it was roughly 28C.

We were setting up in the field at around 5pm as the fly-in was winding down. We were just north of the centerline by about 100 feet.

So, we'd be working on setting up our gear and you'd suddenly hear the snarl of something getting louder and closer and some Extra 300L instantly appear roughly 100 feet above us.

I, of course, stop working and got right into it. Wait five minutes and then a Stearman and a Cap10 took off in formation with smoke on. Another five goes by and a different Extra whips by inverted.

All in all, 3-4 Robin's (I'm in Switzerland), 2 Bucker Jungman's, a Pitts, 2 Extra's, a really pretty early 50's 180, a low wing Technam, a Chipmunk with the paneled canopy (not bubble) in Scandinavian markings.

Around 9pm after everyone had left and the field got quiet, the Cap10 came back and did lovely gentle aerobatics over head with smoke on. Those eliptical wings are so pretty.

What more could you ask for? Anyhow....just had to share this with my propeller head friends.
