Interesting transmission on 126.7 today (August 21st)

Post by Louis »

Hello,

I was in flight late this morning and at around 11:25 EDT heard somebody on 126.7 broadcasting "Civilian aircraft flying 30NM north of Montebello, at x feet, heading 100, you've been intercepted by an armed fighter".

Tuned my other radio on 121.5 (while still monitoring 26.7) to check if I might get the remainder of their conversation, but didn't hear anything else from either the interceptor or intercepted aircraft.

Anybody know what happened after that?

Goodbye,

Louis

Certainly a good enough reason to check your NOTAMs if I've ever seen one.

I've heard that kind of conversation numerous times while cruising in the US. The military guys sure get pissed when they're not noticed or responded to!

I'm guessing there may have been some airspace restriction in that area due to Montebello Summit. Possibly someone not checking the notams or was a little lost.

I was on a flight from YUL to YWG and apparently even the controllers were caught by surprise ... we were cleared to position and hold on the active then were told back to the bay whilst ATC got our new routing.

Enroute a while later we heard no less than five incursions and the ominous threat of interceptions ... one of which had an IFR code and one of the VFR ones the transmissions was from the RCMP who apparently had good enough glasses to see his tail.

Didn't see anyone tonight prostate on the tarmac with handcuffs on the news tonight ...

Learning to read Notams can be expensive for some I guess ...

I'd bet it was more likely a friend trying to freak out someone.. Why would they say they've been intercepted by an armed fighter? Why not say you have been intercepted by the airforce, most would assume that this would be an "armed" aircraft.. JMHO..

intercept

Post by THEICEMAN »

Apparently there were many people who were intercepted!

One of our instructors (also a Dash8 Captain) was intercepted flying somewhere near Montebello.

The CF-18s fired flares from its rear!

Are you sure that it was not your Dash8 friend who fired flares from his rear?

What you need to know is, how to get what you need to know.

This is not a retreat. Its an advance to the rear.

There are only 10 people in this world. Those that understand binary and those that don't.

flying somewhere near Montebello
Incredible the number of pilots who don't do any of:

1) listen to the news on the radio
2) watch the news on TV
3) read the news in a newspaper (I know, far-fetched)
4) read the news online (at a "web-site")
5) check NOTAMs

"NOTAM? What's dat? Do ya eat it, drink it, fly it or screw it?"

That is true for this case but how many time in the States for example, when you ask FSS if there is or will be any active TFR's
( http://map.aeroplanner.com/mapping/TFR.cfm ) in whatever areas and time frames...
Their cover your butt's answers start with:"At this time"

That reminds me, does the FAA have the autority to issue a TFR in Canadian airspace? For example if the President is on a border town in the US does that radius extend to the CDN Side?

No. Despite what Swede might tell you, Canada is not part of the United States.

This comes up more often than you would think - the superbowl in Detroit was a good example.

There were a couple of infraction that day. One in particular was pretty funny.

The guy in question t/o within the closed air space and checked in with Montreal ATC. When asked by them to turn north he attempted to negotiate his heading due to low fuel. They asked him to turn further East 030 and reluctantly he complied. When asked if he could see the F-18`s he didn`t reply.

Coincedentally , I was talking with someone yesterday who had visited the Vankleek Hill Fair. In passing she mention an oddity in the sky that day. She said this poor soul in a yellow single engine was over flying the fair ground and these two fighter appeared to be harrassing him.

I hypothesize he might have slipped by the Montebello security screening with greater with more than 100-ml of shampoo.
