I hold a TCCA ATP & a FAA ATP. I have been flying for an airline in the U.S. the past few years. My FAA ATP and IFR is obviously current do to my Part 121 (airline) flying. My TCCA Group 1 IFR has expired a few months ago. I will be doing a Type Ride soon in the U.S. for a Canadian registered aircraft. I do understand that the Type Rating will transfer over from my FAA ATP to my TCCA ATP with no additional check rides.
Will I have to do a “TCCA Group 1 Renewal Ride” with a Transport Canada designated examiner in addition to the Type Ride in order to have a current TCCA Group 1 IFR, even though the Type Rating transfers right over?
I have spoken with Transport Canada and it seems that they feel that I will have to do a “TCCA Group 1 IFR Renewal Ride” once back in Canada or have a Transport Canada designated examiner present for the Type Ride in the U.S. - They say that this is the only way I can achieve a current TCCA Group 1 IFR.
I am having a hard time understanding that a PIC Jet Aircraft Type Ride (which covers above and beyond the requirement for a simple IFR renewal) will not renew my TCCA IFR simply because a TCCA examiner is not present at the time of the ride - Especially when the Type transfers over anyways (with no TCCA examiner present). Not to mention that I am obviously IFR current as far as approaches and the other requirements.
I will contact Transport Canada again for a final confirmation, before I fly a TCCA designated examiner all the way down to the sim location in the U.S. I am hoping to get some second opinions to this issue. Maybe I’m missing something...It just seems awfully ridicules. Maybe there’s a TCCA person out there who could comment on the validity and reasoning behind this?
Thanx.
