I saw the 340 sitting on Hotel Between Lima and Delta. I don't think it was exiting the runway, seeing as it wasn't near one. I think it was taxiing for departure.
ya there is no way it "ran off the runway" we taxied past it... i got some pics. the funny part is the F/O was standing there next to it on his cell phone.just looked like their left main gear went a little bit off the taxiway and got stuck in the grass.

That is correct. They were taxiing for departure on 26L. I was in YVR twice today; we were picking up the IFR on clearance delivery when the controller cut us short saying something about an emergency. As we taxiied out we could see the trucks and emergency vehicles surround the plane. Came back a few hours later and they were still there. Not sure on the details but it must have been fairly significant.

Whatd they do with the pax's? Shuttle bus em back?
In the case of heavies, over steering is required to keep the majority of the longitudinal axis along the yellow line whenever making a turn during taxi. So no, when sitting in the front of a A340, simply pointing the nose along the line will not keep your mains out of the sod in some cases.
The news report was that apparently it aborted a takeoff and judging by the heavy braking marks (skid) on the right side that could have been true. But they definately peeled off a bunch of rubber. I don't think that would happen at taxi speeds.
The aircraft was taxiing for departure.
The lh main gear departed the taxiway onto the grass.
The crew reported to contract mtce a "Hyd problem and they couldn't steer"
Aircraft is in the Air Canada hanger being checked.
