For the love of God! Watch out for the two wheelers!!

Post by niss »

I dont know why but for some reason old people will try to kill you! Its not just the old folk its everybody. Usually its the men who will stop then gun it through the intersection causing me to slam on my brakes, or the women who dont even signal but deside to hammer on their brakes at the last second and reef on the wheel to turn in. Or they do whatever the hell they want without looking!

For the love of Christ! Think about the two wheelers! It doesnt take much to kill us! The only crumple zone on a bike is you. If one more person tries to kill me im gonna have to beat them to death with my helmet.

Did you ever think to yourself, maybe drive to be seen? Don't hide in peoples C pillars, and drive like everyone is GOING to kill you, not just might.

In my experience, people on two wheels drive like morons and their IQ seems to be inversely proportionate to the horsepower between their legs.

On the positive side niss, since your moped has so little power, you're probably one the smartest drivers on two wheels!

99.9% of motorcycle riders are very safe, it is the few (usually younger men) that ride like jackasses and that is who most people remember. On the otherside, about 5% of people actually drive safely enough to look properly for motorcycles. Niss is right, watch the hell out, and don't lump us all in with the indestructable's that do 200 km/h.

I do, I make all my moves slow and deliberate, give people pleanty of space. I have 2 3M reflective Canadian flags on my black helemt, usually wear a red and white backpack, have the hedlights on when they work and ride a bright yellow bike.

The people I am talking about are the ignorant fools who dont look to see where they are going.

Take this crazy bitch for example. She had the stop at a three way intersection, I had the right of way. She stopped for a second, lookd to her left (south) but decided that was enough and didnt look at me. She pulled right through to go to her driveway, leaving me to hammer on my brakes or launch myself over her car.

Seriously people, I try to ride like I am invisible, the problem is, alot of people drive like everyone is invisible! Look around and stop trying to kill me!

Note - Statistics in my previous post were thoroughly researched in my mind over the 30 seconds that I took to write the post.

That is the reality of riding a bike boys. Always has been, always will be. Why do you think your mother didn't want you to get one?

CID, the VAST majority of motorcycle vs. car accidents are caused by cars. Most car drivers just don't have a clue. If you had some bike "time", you'd understand the problem better. It'd also make you a more aware motorist. However, there is a fringe group out there on high horsepower sport bikes that do, indeed make the rest of us look bad. But I'd put even them way above the average dumb blond on a cell phone, doing her nails on the Gardner!
And niss, you have to learn to ride like you're "invisible", because you are. You have to ride like everybody is out to kill you. Because they are. Read some magazine articles on the subject. Or, take a course. I would recommend you purchase a high visibility vest. Go and do that today.

Well said, Doc. Bikes ARE invisible to a good potion of the four-wheel crowd.

I always assume that I have NOT been seen until I've made eye contact with the other driver. The RCMP charging Miss Etta Maye with reckless driving or failing to yield the right of way will be of little comfort to me if from that day forth I occupy a wheelchair - or a casket.

I drive more kilometers over the winter season than most people drive in a three year period...and my excellent record speaks for the level of caution and thought that going into the way that I drive. Even so, I go above and beyond that when I'm riding.

Wearing high-vis clothing is a good idea...but your first line of defense is your brain. If you're not prepared to operate in the sort of mental state necessary to see, assess, and monitor every vehicle that's anywhere near you, then you should do yourself a favour and stick to vehicles with four wheels.

Always drive defensively on a bike
Wear a gloves ,a helmet and nice boots.
The boots are for kicking dents in dizzy bastards cars .
Whenever some rimmer in a daze used to pull out in front of me i would put a big dent in their car just to remind them to drive safe

Oh, I wouldn't go around kicking cars. One twist of the wheel, and you're worm food! That's the attitude that gets us a bad name...but I know you're just funning with us.
Try tossing small rocks over your shoulder when some ditz tail gates you. That works.

I've actually reached behind myself sitting on the back of my father's bike and pounded on the hood of the car that was nearly touching his back wheel. Most motorists think they can Tailgate a bike like they can a car (which is also not good). Give the guys on 2 wheel some space!

Pounding on a car....kicking a car....etc, is really stupid. You never know who you're dealing with. A car can kill you pretty much instantly. And even if YOU are RIGHT, you are DEAD....WHY can't people see that???
It's like these total MORONS who walk across a street without looking because they have a GREEN light.....EVER SEE THE FIRST OR EVEN THE SECOND CAR STOP ON A RED IN SOME CITIES??? People are really the dumbest animal out there!

Do you have a horn? Or just a thumb bell? IF you don't see a driver "look" at you, you'd better assume they don't know you're there. I'm never shy about using my horn at an intersection if the driver has not looked in my direction. The "eye contact" somebody mentioned is not enough. I've still had them pull out. I always use my high beam in town. And I always approach an intersection with an escape route in mind. Think about the "what ifs" and have a plan. It's easy, and will become second nature. Enter an intersection with caution. If the car pulls out, aim at their rear bumper, never try to go around their front end. By the time you arrive where the rear bumper was, it'll be gone. I'd hate to think of you headed for hospital again.....you might get stuck in a maternity ward.

By the way Doc... I didn't hit the hood that hard.. just enough to make some noise, not damage it. I really didn't feel like having Grampa bumping the back of the bike. And yes I could quite clearly see the driver. He jumped as if he didn't see us right there in front of him.

Many moons ago there was a campaign started by a biker magazine in England called "Dent a Volvo week"
Volvo's were only 4% of the vehicles on the road and yet the drivers of these super safe steel caged vehicles took the attitude that because they were in this big cage of steel they were safe. This small percentage of vehicles caused over 20% of the motorcycle accidents .It seems the safer they make a car and the safer a driver feels the more dangerous the behavior to other road users .The campaign was a success .After the many dents the deaths of bikers went down.
