A good day fishing: Engine Recovered
Camera's Make Great Bait
As some of you know, Kevin Decock (brother of Doug and Trevor) has spent the last several weeks plotting, measuring, calculating, practicing, to recover that darned engine, once and for all. On Monday afternoon, as he drifted over the area alone in a small boat with his camera-bated hook, he caught something very heavy that looked suspiciously like our treasure. Last minute volunteers were found and it was towed closer to shore as it was winched. It broke surface about 9.30 this evening and it was soon confirmed to be the engine of C-GAQW, propeller still intact. By midnight the engine had been pulled aboard. The crew will be staying the night on a remote island. They are expected to deliver to Heriot Bay late Tuesday morning, September 11th.
Stay tuned for pics later today!

Amazing, really, that the fancy underwater stuff that cost so much failed and disappointed everyone yet this low-tech operation worked so well. Guess that explains why I find the only old logging cable in the bay when I anchor my boat....
Great news for you - keep us posted!

So, the story is on both A-Channel and Chek 6 ... will repeat at 11 and I will be posting via youtube later ...
In the meantime ...
Here is a pic of it on the deck of the "Gung Ho" - operated by a couple of loggers who forgot their backpack and answered our calls!

If you can believe it, it was hooked onto the exhaust pipe ... Like this:

back:
Notice the prop does not appear to be bent ... and, well, evidence of fire?

What an amazing effort you have made to see this through Widow. I salute you and your perseverence. It must be quite the rollercoaster of emotions and I hope the findings shed some light on the subject. Also, I hope it provides you with an extra piece of the "closure puzzle" we all seek when things like this happen. I know some feelings never go dormant, but knowing you have all the information at hand can be comforting, I know.
For my own curiosity, how bent up is that prop at each tip? It looks pretty straight to me. I'll be curious to know how poor weather and pilot error made that propeller stop spinning before it hit the water
The prop looks awfully straight for something that was supposed to have been producing power when it made contact with the water.

I am still in Athens and it is 14:30 on Wednesday as I opened Avcanada and saw this.

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Well done Widow! I've been reading about your struggles here on Avcanada for some time now and it was nice to hear some good news. I sincerely hope that you can now find the answers you're looking for.
It's been mentioned already in this thread but I'll say it again: You truely are an inspiration to all of us.

The prop will eventually be mounted at the memorial bench on Rebecca Spit ... that has been the plan for a long time ... mind, we all expected it to look like it'd been in an accident!
The engine lived in my driveway last night .... I tried to drag my bed to the other side of my room so I could watch it out the window all night, but king size beds are hard to move ... so instead i just got a pile of blankets and curled up on the floor ... it was really nice to wake up and look out the window and see the prize every 45 seconds or so!
